The new Russian fifth-generation engine for surface ships is a big event for the Russian Navy. It will be another evidence that the Russian industry is increasing its capacity and accumulating knowledge.
This is written by Forbes. It is noted that a huge M55R gas turbine ship engine was delivered to the Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg. It will be installed on the new Russian frigate "Admiral Isakov".
The first to receive a new engine was the frigate Admiral Golovko, which was launched in 2020. The article notes that ship engines are very complex units that are affected by extremely unfavorable weather conditions - waves at sea, extreme temperatures and metal corrosion. Therefore, it is important to have modern engines.
"RG" wrote that the unit is based on the results of the implementation of an advance project to create a marine engine with a capacity of 25 MW. It is distinguished by a low-emission combustion chamber and new high-temperature corrosion-resistant alloys. The creation of engines with a capacity of 25-35 MW and 13 MW is considered as a priority.
Forbes notes: the new M55R units will receive two more frigates-Admiral Yumashev and Admiral Spiridonov. UEC and the St. Petersburg enterprise have already signed a contract to equip these frigates with these engines.
