INTERFAX-FAR EAST-A bilateral military exercise involving the forces of the Eastern Military District( VVO), the Pacific Fleet, has begun on the Kuril Islands (Iturup and Kunashir), on Sakhalin and in the waters of the Sea of Japan, the press service of the VVO reported on Wednesday.
"In total, more than 10 thousand servicemen, up to 500 units of military equipment, about 32 aircraft, about 12 ships and vessels of the Pacific Fleet for various purposes are taking part in the combat training event," the report says.
The exercise " modeled the initial situation in the Far East, which is based on the confrontation between two coalitions of conditional states."
During the practical actions of the troops, it is planned to land naval and tactical landings.
The maneuvers in the island zone of the VVO will be held in two stages and will last five days. The exercise is led by the acting commander of the VVO troops, Lieutenant General Sergei Sevryukov. During the exercise, the leadership will work out the use of an interspecific grouping of troops to ensure Russia's military security on the eastern borders.
