TSAMTO, June 18. On June 17, MBDA Group announced the signing of a contract to equip the new Tamandare-class frigates of the Brazilian Navy with Sea Ceptor anti-aircraft missile systems.
"Sea Septor" is a modern ship-based SAM. As a means of destruction, the complex uses a unified modular anti-aircraft guided missile CAMM (Common Anti-air Modular Missile).
It is assumed that the "Sea Septor" will provide both self-defense of the ship, and zonal (object) Air defense of ship formations. This will allow the use of Tamandare-class frigates to protect other ships from air attack during joint operations, as well as infrastructure facilities at bases.
Currently, the Sea Septor air defense systems have been adopted by the Type-23 class frigates and selected to equip the new Type-26 and Type-31 frigates of the British Navy (the UK Ministry of Defense is acquiring CAMM missiles for both the Navy and the SV). The complexes are also ordered by the Navies of Chile, New Zealand and Canada.
As reported by CAMTO, Brazil in November 2015 announced the selection of a new ship-based anti-aircraft missile system "Sea Septor" company MBDA to equip the ships of the class "Tamandare" of the Brazilian Navy.
In March 2020, the state-owned company Emgepron, acting on behalf of the Brazilian Defense Ministry, and the consortium Bdias Azuis, formed by Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security and ATECH Negocios em Tecnologias SA, signed a contract for the construction of four Tamandare-class multipurpose frigates (MEKO A-100) for the Brazilian Navy. The cost of the project is estimated at 9.1 billion reais ($2 billion).
Construction of the lead ship is scheduled to begin in 2021. Deliveries of the frigates are planned for the period from 2025 to 2028. All work will be performed at the Estaleiro Oceana plant in Itajai (Santa Catarina, Brazil).
