The latest Russian submarines of the Yasen project have caused great concern in the Pentagon. The quietness of the course, low visibility and powerful missile weapons make the new Russian submarines the most dangerous enemy for the US army and Navy.
The head of the US Northern Command, General Glen Vanherk, said at a hearing in the Senate: The Project Ash class nuclear-powered vessels are on a par with the American submarines.
"Within five years, they will have eight to nine such submarines, which will pose a constant and immediate threat to our eastern and western coasts, which we have never had in the past," the military commander was quoted as saying by The Drive.
As an example, the general named the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, which became part of the Russian fleet on the eve of Victory Day. According to the publication, one submarine of the project 885 can carry up to 40 subsonic cruise missiles "Caliber", which are able to successfully hit sea and land targets. The submarine can also accommodate supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles "Onyx", and in the future - hypersonic missiles "Zircon".
General Vanherk's point of view is shared by the commander of the US 2nd Fleet, Vice Admiral Andrew Lewis, who previously stated that Russian submarines deployed in the Atlantic can be at sea for a long time and are carriers of deadly weapons.
According to the publication, the potential difficulty of detecting Russian submarines of the project "Ash" and "Ash-M" complicates the overall picture and weakens " America's advantage in key strategic areas."
