A reconnaissance ship of the Russian Navy approached the Hawaiian Islands. This was stated by the official representative of the American Pacific Fleet, Captain John Gay, to the information service of the United States Naval Institute.
"The Pacific Fleet is aware of a Russian vessel operating in international waters off Hawaii and will continue to monitor it as long as it is here," he said.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense noted that the ship was operating within the framework of international law and did not pose a danger to navigation. However, the vessel does not transmit an Automatic identification system (AIS) signal. It is assumed that this is a medium intelligence vessel (AGI) of the Karelia class, which is designed for radio reconnaissance, radio interception and decoding enemy messages.
According to John Gay, with the help of patrol aircraft, surface ships and joint forces, the United States will closely monitor all ships in the Indo-Pacific region.
On May 21, the ship "Karelia" was located 21 km west of the island of Kauai, where the Pacific missile range Barking Sands is located, where the US Navy and the Missile Defense Agency are testing various missiles.
On May 26, the United States expressed its readiness for dialogue with Russia on preventing incidents on the high seas and in the airspace above it.
