The Northern Fleet has formed a group to participate in the next complex expedition to Novaya Zemlya.
Together with the military sailors, specialists of the 12th Main Directorate of the Ministry of Defense and representatives of the Murmansk regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society will travel around the Southern Island of the archipelago on the icebreaker Ilya Muromets, the military department said.
The most trained specialists went to the Northern Fleet expeditionary group, and it will be headed by an officer of the SF staff, Captain 2nd rank Sergey Zinchenko.
As part of a comprehensive expedition to Novaya Zemlya, a historical experiment began to reconstruct the expedition of the XVIII century by Fyodor Rozmyslov in the Matochkin Shar Strait. After almost 300 years, the servicemen of the Central Training Ground of the Russian Federation under the leadership of Colonel Sergei Kostarev repeated one of the days of the Rozmyslov detachment, walking 24 kilometers on the ice of the Strait. On the route, the accuracy of the measurements made by Fyodor Timofeevich was checked, along the way, the military searched for possible traces of the expedition.
- All works were carried out in accordance with the legislation on the protection of cultural monuments, - the Ministry of Defense noted.
The expedition will sail around the Southern Island in August. The 12th General Directorate of the Ministry of Defense is responsible for the supply of nuclear weapons to the Armed Forces and the safety of their storage.
On the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, there is a Central test Site, where nuclear weapons tests were conducted until 1990. According to open sources, near the archipelago there is a burial of nuclear waste: containers with spent fuel of ships of the Northern Fleet and nuclear icebreakers, reactor compartments and assemblies, as well as the completely submerged nuclear submarine K-27.
