The crews of two submarines off the coast of the Kaliningrad region attacked and counterattacked each other with the mutual use of weapons and sonar equipment.
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Volkhov are diesel-electric submarines of the 636.3 series of the Varshavyanka project. And in the course of the confrontation, both had a difficult time. Since one of the main advantages of the "Varshavianok" series 636.3 – a low level of noise.
According to the terms of the exercise, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky DAPL was supposed to find an enemy submarine, the role of which was played by the Volkhov DAPL.
The submarine "Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky", having secretly entered the area of maneuvers, took a favorable position for shooting and attacked the enemy with a torpedo. Then, moving away from the retaliatory attack, the submarine conducted a post-salvo maneuver. The Volkhov DAPL, maneuvering, also evaded the blow and executed a conditional counterattack.
The conditions of the dueling situation were modeled in such a way as to equalize the chances of both submarines in an underwater duel. According to the preliminary assessment of the command, both crews successfully coped with the tasks set, the head of the information support department of the press service of the Western Military District for the Baltic Fleet, Captain 1st rank Roman Martov, told the Military-Industrial Courier.
