NOVO-OGAREVO, March 26. /TASS/. A nuclear submarine conducted a torpedo firing from under the ice during the Umka-21 expedition in the Arctic. This was reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Nikolai Evmenov.
According to him, "a practical torpedo firing by a nuclear submarine from under the ice was performed, followed by the equipment of a polynya at the point of ascent of the torpedo and its rise to the surface."
The Admiral reported to the head of state that since March 20, a complex Arctic expedition "Umka-2021"is being conducted in the area of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, the Alexandra Land Island and the adjacent water area covered with solid ice. During it, for the first time in the history of the Russian Navy, three nuclear submarines surfaced from under the ice in a limited area with a radius of 300 meters, a flight to the polar region with refueling in the air of a pair of MiG-31 fighters with a passage of the geographical point of the North Pole. In addition, tactical exercises were conducted by a unit of the Arctic motorized rifle brigade in difficult weather conditions.
Evmenov noted that the complex of combat training, research and practical activities of various directions according to a single plan and plan is being carried out in the circumpolar regions for the first time. He said that the expedition provides for 43 activities, of which 35 have been completed so far, including 10 jointly with the Russian Geographical Society. The expedition involved more than 600 military and civilian personnel and about 200 samples of weapons, military and special equipment. "All planned events take place in harsh climatic conditions: in the area of the expedition, the average temperature is minus 25-30 degrees Celsius; the thickness of the ice cover is up to 1.5 m; the wind gusts reach 32 m per second. <...> As a result of the events, the samples of weapons, military and special equipment participating in military - technical experiments have generally confirmed their tactical and technical characteristics in conditions of high latitudes and low temperatures," the commander-in-chief stressed.
According to him, the Arctic naval operations will continue in the future. "At the same time, the main condition for each subsequent expedition will be the development of new, previously unexplored areas," Evmenov reported.
