Nuclear-powered icebreakers of the project 22220 are needed to ensure Russian leadership in the Arctic, they will be able to conduct caravans of ships, breaking through ice up to three meters thick. These icebreakers will provide pilotage with hydrocarbons from fields in Yamal, gydansky Peninsula and the Kara sea to the markets of the Asia-Pacific region.
In October 2020, the main universal icebreaker "Arctic" of Project 22220, built at the "Baltic Plant", was transferred to Rosatom and officially became part of the Russian nuclear fleet. Now the Baltzavod is building serial icebreakers of project 22220 - "Siberia", "Ural", "Yakutia"and " Chukotka".
The nuclear-powered vessels of the project 22220 are equipped with a two-reactor power plant with the main steam source from the RITM-200 reactor plant with a capacity of 175 megawatts. The two-seat design of the vessels allows them to be used both in Arctic waters and in the mouths of polar rivers.
