The new tanker is based on the IL-76MD-90A military transport aircraft. the improved aircraft is equipped with four new-generation ps-90a-76 engines. The tanker has a completely updated flight and navigation system, as well as a "glass cabin", which reduces the load on the crew and increases flight safety.

On the part of bmpd, we recall that to date, only a prototype of the Il-78M-90A tanker aircraft (serial number 0201, registration number RF-78741), developed by Il PJSC on the basis of the Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft, has been manufactured at Aviastar-SP JSC in Ulyanovsk. It was launched at Aviastar-SP JSC on November 29, 2017 and made its first flight on January 19, 2018, and completed three test flights until January 25, 2018 (while the flight on January 25 was officially declared "first"). After that, the aircraft did not take off for 11 months, being on modifications and ground testing of systems, and only on December 27, 2018, it made the fourth test flight, officially counted as the first under the factory flight test program. In 2019, it was stated that the State tests of the IL-78M-90A are planned to be completed in 2021.
The construction and testing of the first prototype of the Il‑78M‑90A aircraft is carried out under a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for the development of a promising tanker aircraft based on the Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft as part of the ROC "Creation of the Il-76MD‑90A heavy military transport aircraft and a promising tanker aircraft based on it".
