MOSCOW, Dec 7-RIA Novosti. The fourth serial Russian nuclear icebreaker "Chukotka" project 22220 will be built at the "Baltic plant" in St. Petersburg on December 18, the company said.
"On December 18, the laying ceremony of the new serial nuclear icebreaker project 22220 will take place on the "a" slipway of the Baltic plant. It will be named "Chukotka", - the message says.
The customer is the state Corporation "Rosatom".
In October, the world's most powerful head-mounted universal nuclear-powered Arktika project 22220, built at the Baltic plant, was handed over to Rosatom and officially became part of the Russian nuclear fleet. Currently, the Baltzavod is building three serial nuclear-powered vessels of project 22220 - "Siberia", "Ural"and the icebreaker "Yakutia", which was laid down in may this year.
The project 22220 nuclear-powered vessels are needed to ensure Russia's leadership in the Arctic. they will be able to conduct caravans of ships, breaking through ice up to three meters thick. These icebreakers will provide pilotage of vessels with hydrocarbons from fields in Yamal, gydansky peninsulas and the Kara sea to the markets of the Asia-Pacific region.
