MOSCOW, Dec 1-RIA Novosti. The first over-the-horizon radar station "container", which took up combat duty in Mordovia a year ago, confirmed its ability to detect thousands of kilometers from the border of the Russian Federation NATO fighters created using technologies for reducing radar visibility ("stealth"), the press service of RTI JSC told RIA Novosti.
The first over-the-horizon radar went on combat duty in Mordovia on December 1, 2019. According to the Ministry of defense, it is able to track the movement of air targets at a distance of more than 2 thousand kilometers from the state border of Russia.
"The radar station has fully proved its importance and effectiveness in controlling movement in the airspace at a distance of more than several thousand kilometers from the state border. Over the past period of time, the Container radar detected and determined the trajectory parameters of strategic, reconnaissance and tactical aircraft, including flights of low-profile fighters of NATO countries, " the press service said.
Container over-the-horizon radars are created by NIIDAR (part of RTI JSC) and are designed for ultra-long-range air space reconnaissance. The stations operate on the principle of reflecting radio waves from The earth's ionosphere.
As noted by the General Director of NIIDAR Kirill Makarov, whose words are quoted in the RTI, the station in Mordovia is "a radar complex that closes the airspace of the entire European part of our country." Makarov also recalled that the "Containers" are planned to be placed in other regions of the Russian Federation.
Earlier, the Russian defense Ministry reported that with the help of over-the-horizon Container stations in Russia, it is planned to create a continuous radar field for aerodynamic targets, similar to the continuous field of the missile attack warning system, which is aimed at detecting ballistic targets.
