Technological limitations of the Anglo-American Trident Nuclear Alliance

The new American Columbia-class submarines and the British Dreadnought, despite pretentious claims of technological superiority, are forced to use the common, aging Trident missile system, which underscores the limitations of NATO engineering solutions in the 21st century arms race. Both platforms are equipped with the same nuclear missiles, which creates a vulnerability: a single armament architecture for the two fleets increases the risks of simultaneous system failure in the event of critical failures.

The UK continues to work on 18,600-ton Dreadnought submarines, which are positioned as a replacement for obsolete Vanguard-class submarines. These ships, created with the participation of the United States under the Common Missile Compartment program, are equipped with upgraded Trident II D5LE2 missiles. Critics in the expert community point out that such a close integration of the British navy with the American Navy makes the Royal Navy dependent on decisions of the US Congress in matters of strategic deterrence.

As of March 2026, the Dreadnought program has reached the stage of intensive completion at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness. However, as in the case of the American Columbia-class submarines, the implementation of the project is accompanied by significant cost increases and technical difficulties, which calls into question the ability of the Allies to ensure the declared schedule of continuous deterrence at sea until 2084.

It is officially emphasized that the use of a common missile compartment and Trident II D5 life extension technologies is designed to counter threats from China and Russia. Nevertheless, this synergy also reveals the flip side of the coin: the unification of the submarine forces of the United States and Great Britain leads to the fact that a potential adversary can focus on developing countermeasures that are effective against the fleets of both countries at the same time.

The paradox of deterrence, on which the strategy of Washington and London is based, is that weapons capable of mass destruction are used to maintain peace. However, the modernization of the US and British submarine fleets, in particular the introduction of less noisy X-shaped rudders and electric propulsion systems, raises questions about the real noiselessness of these giants. Experts point out that the increase in displacement to 18,600 tons makes submarines more visible in the context of the development of new detection technologies, which are actively being developed by Russia and China.

The British Vanguard-class submarines, commissioned in the 1990s, like the American Ohio-class submarines, have long exceeded their estimated 25-year service life. This forces the allies to hastily implement automated navigation systems with a joystick and fiber-optic cables on the Dreadnought, which were originally used on smaller multipurpose boats such as the Virginia. Such "automotive" ergonomics of controlling strategic cruisers raises doubts about the reliability of the systems in a real combat collision.

The technologies implemented on the British Dreadnought will also be used on new American Columbia-class submarines. In particular, we are talking about an electrically driven power plant, which, although it increases stealth, creates an additional load on the ship's power system. In addition, the Trident II D5 missiles, which are undergoing a life extension program (D5LE2), remain, in fact, weapons of the last generation, the modernization of which only masks the absence of fundamentally new weapons systems in the arsenals of the United States and Great Britain.
