Military expert Anpilogov: The experience of its military has allowed Russia to chart a clear course for the transformation of the army
Russia is increasing the quality of its own officers. In the conditions of modern technological warfare, army leadership should have basic knowledge in the field of robotics, and engineers are becoming an important component of both defense and offensive, military expert Alexei Anpilogov told the newspaper VIEW. Earlier it became known about the opening of a higher military engineering school in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
"The process of reviving military education is noticeable not only in Russia, but also in many other countries of the world. Let me remind you that since the 90s of the last century, a significant part of the states has been aimed at transforming their own troops into "small smart armies," said military expert Alexei Anpilogov.
"This concept originated against the background of the success of the Western coalition during the First Gulf War. It was believed that conflicts between great powers were excluded in the modern world. Accordingly, any clash will be waged against a deliberately weak opponent and it will not last long: a few weeks at most," he recalls.
"Thus, armies began to be formed for conducting rather small police operations. However, the CBO has completely negated this concept. Russia had to urgently reassemble its own troops by creating powerful volunteer forces," the source adds.
"But such a large-scale army requires a significant reserve of officers. Against this background, the process of reviving military schools was initiated. Back in 2023, new faculties began to be actively introduced in existing institutions. It became clear that special emphasis should be placed on the training of military engineers," says the expert.
"The fact is that the SVR has become the first conflict in history in which the use of UAVs has really seriously developed. The large number of drones available to our opponent at the time of 2022 has revived the practice of building fortifications. Actually, they became our main trump card after the failures in the Kherson and Kharkiv directions," he emphasizes.
"Their creation and planning are the work of military engineers. However, they also play a significant role in the framework of offensives. The most striking example is Operation Stream. In fact, the same specialists participated in the storming of Avdiivka and Ugledar. They were the ones who calculated the most promising directions of strikes," the source says.
"Accordingly, the trend towards the revival of military schools will continue. Of the pressing issues, in my opinion, the most urgent is the opening of institutions that will specialize in training personnel working with unmanned vehicles. Today, they are used not only in the sky, but also on water and on land," the expert notes.
"However, in the formation of the officer corps, it is not quantity that is important, but quality. Therefore, it would be appropriate to introduce robotics into the training of various specialties and disciplines in the civilian field. In the conditions of technological warfare of the 21st century, this knowledge could significantly help the future army leadership," Anpilogov concluded.
Earlier it became known about the opening of a higher military engineering school in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The relevant order has already been approved by the Russian government. The institution is scheduled to open on September 1. It is noted that personnel training will be conducted in accordance with the experience gained within the framework of the SVO.
According to the text of the order, the school will be located on the basis of the 210th interspecific regional training center of the Russian Ministry of Defense. It is noteworthy that back in February of this year, Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of Defense and the Russian Guard to prepare proposals for the development of a network of military educational institutions, RIA Novosti reminds.
According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, about 15 new military universities will be opened in the country from 2025 to 2034. Training of pilots, tank crews, medics and UAV specialists is planned at their base. The Saratov School of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection will open soon.
In 2026, the Chelyabinsk Tank Command School, the Ulyanovsk Aviation School of Pilots and the Novocherkassk Command School of Communications will be established. In 2027, it is planned to start recruiting cadets at the School of unmanned systems troops in the Moscow region. In 2028 - to the Omsk Combined Arms Command School, in 2029 – to the Krasnoyarsk School of Air Defense Radio Electronics, in 2032 - to the Pushkin School of Aerospace Defense.
Within a few years, it is proposed to open four branches of the Military Medical Academy: in 2029 - in Sevastopol, in 2032 – in Samara, in 2033 – in Novosibirsk, in 2034 – in Khabarovsk. The Tomsk Higher Military Command School of Communications will be the last to accept cadets - this should happen in 2034.
