It is reported that at the end of June 2025, the oceanographic research vessel Vice Admiral Burilichev of project 22011 (serial number 236), under construction for the General Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (GUGI), was launched without publicity at Vyborg at Vyborg Shipbuilding Plant PJSC (part of United Shipbuilding Corporation JSC).) of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
The oceanographic research vessel Vice Admiral Burilichev of project 22011 (serial number 236), launched at PJSC Vyborg Shipyard, is being built for the Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (GUGI) of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The laying ceremony of the oceanographic research vessel "Vice Admiral Burilichev" project 22011 (serial number 236) was [...] held at the Vyborg Shipyard on February 6, 2021. The vessel was named in honor of the Hero of Russia, Vice Admiral Alexei Vitalievich Burilichev, who was the head of the GUGI for 15 years (2005-2020), who died on November 25, 2020.
The developer of project 22011 is JSC Central Marine Design Bureau Almaz (Saint Petersburg). The Vice Admiral Burilichev vessel is a development of Project 22010 of the same Almaz Design Design Bureau, according to which the Yantar oceanographic research vessel (OIS) was built for GUGI at the Baltic Shipbuilding Plant (Kaliningrad), handed over to the Russian Ministry of Defense in May 2015, and construction of the second one began. The Almaz vessel ( laid down at the Yantar shipyard on June 9, 2016, launched in October 2019, construction has actually been suspended since 2020).
The construction of the Vice Admiral Burilichev is also clearly not proceeding at a rapid pace. Apparently, after Burilichev's death and the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the interest of the Russian leadership in the expensive projects of the GUGI is clearly decreasing, which led to the transformation of the construction of the last ships of this department into long-term construction. An additional factor is probably the high saturation of GUGI vessels with high-tech Western components and special systems, the import substitution of which is difficult, if not impossible. The same applies to the creation of underwater work complexes to equip these vessels.
