Sahand is the first destroyer of the Iranian Navy, which was built, as officially stated, solely by its own forces. It belongs to a very limited number of ships that have received a second life.
IRIS Sahand was launched in December 2018 and is the third representative of the Moudge project. Its displacement is 1200-1500 tons, and its length is 95 m. Four diesel engines provide travel speeds of up to 30 knots. The duration of the hike is 150 days if there is an MTO. The standard crew consists of about 140 people.
Before the accident, the ship participated in international missions, including a 133-day crossing of the world ocean to participate in the celebration of the Russian Navy Day in St. Petersburg in 2021. In July 2024, the destroyer, while undergoing repairs at the dock in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas (in particular, the propeller shaft was dismantled), lost stability due to filling the tanks with water, tilted, tipped over to port and eventually partially sank.

As explained in the Navy, after lifting the pennant, it took only 10 days to return it to service. It is currently undergoing repairs, which the command decided to combine with modernization, having worked out the process for carrying out similar work on other destroyers. As indicated in the Tasnim publication, among other things, the ship will receive the Sayyad-3 and Navvab air defense systems. As a result, it will carry 12 missiles of three different types.

Prior to the current upgrade, the destroyer's armament included 8 Qader anti-ship missiles, 4 Mehrab missiles (Sayyad-2 naval version), 2 three-tube 324-mm TA, 76-mm Fajr-27 artillery system, Kamand air defense system, 30-mm Fath-40 cannon, 20-mm cannon and two 12.7-mm machine guns. There is a Bell 212 PLO helicopter base on board. The ship's radar systems include the Asr 3D PESA long-range radar, and electronic countermeasures are assigned to remote control units with dipole reflectors. The design includes masking elements by reducing the external protrusions and integrating the chimney into the superstructure.

The Sayyad-3, which the ship will receive, belongs to the 3rd generation of Iranian solid-fuel surface-to-air missiles. Its claimed range is 120 km, and the maximum height of damage is from 27 to 30 km. Ignorance is carried out in several modes: radar (active and semi-active) and infrared.
Navvab is a marine variant of the Zoubin short-range air defense system, introduced in 2021. The air defense system, capable of shooting down aircraft at low altitudes, consists of radar with AFAR, SLA and VPU, combined into a single platform. The complex can detect up to 100 targets and hit 8 of them simultaneously, with a detection range of 30 km and a range of 15 to 20 km.
