Recently, the US Navy published images of F-35C fighter jets equipped with a new mirror coating, which is supposed to increase their stealth in the infrared range.
The aircraft belong to the 9th Flight Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX-9), which is responsible for testing new systems. The images show a reflective coating applied over the traditional gray paint of the F-35C. It consists of numerous panels arranged in such a way that they do not interfere with the operation of the chassis and internal weapon compartments.

You can also notice that there are plates of different sizes and shapes, both triangular and "diamond-shaped", the reflectivity of which varies depending on the angle at which the photo was taken.
- it is noted in the edition of The Aviationist.

As indicated, the US Air Force has already experimented with similar panels on F-22 fighter jets. According to the pilots, it was an attempt to protect the fuselage from wear caused by flying in conditions of so-called "salt air". Then, judging by their statements, the project was unsuccessful due to the constant peeling of the panels as soon as the fighter began to maneuver.

In 2022, two F-35Cs from the VX-9 have already been spotted having similar coverage. In 2023, another F-35C aircraft from the 125th Fighter Strike Squadron (VFA) was captured in a similar appearance, albeit with fewer panels.
It is noteworthy that The Aviationist reports that according to the results of checking the new images published by the US Navy, it turned out that they were taken on August 30, 2022, and not on April 28, 2025, as indicated by the military department.
