A solemn steel cutting ceremony for the first of two new generation frigates took place in Genoa, where the Riva Trigoso shipyard, owned by the Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri, is located. These will be the first ships of the FREMM EVO project.

Work has begun in accordance with a contract concluded between the Organization for Cooperation in the Field of Armaments (OCCAR) and Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), a joint venture between two Italian firms, Fincantieri and Leonardo. The contract amount for the construction of two frigates is 1.5 billion euros. The ships are expected to be transferred to the Italian Navy in 2029 and 2030.

The event was attended by company representatives and senior officers of the Italian Navy, including Admiral Giuseppe Abbamonte, Chief Inspector of the Navy.
Thus, Italy has begun construction of the newest frigate of the FREMM EVO project, equipped with advanced anti-UAV systems. The ship will have other technological advantages, including integrated unmanned systems for operations in the air, on the water surface and underwater.
In addition, increased protection against cyber attacks, improved air conditioning and power supply systems are provided. The frigate will be equipped with a dual-band radar for missile defense, an upgraded electronic warfare system, sonar and missile weapons.
