At the ceremony, Vladimir Putin promised to further strengthen the Russian Navy.

Vladimir Putin, during the launching ceremony of the Perm nuclear-powered submarine, noted that this is the first multi-purpose submarine to receive Zircon hypersonic missiles. According to experts, Perm is designed to perform a number of tasks, it is capable of effectively destroying both sea and land targets.

The most advanced and modern

Vladimir Putin took part in the launching ceremony of the new Perm nuclear-powered submarine via video link. Admiral Alexander Moiseev, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, reported to the head of state that the slipway stage of the submarine's construction had been completed and asked for permission to launch.

—Permission granted,— the head of state gave the command.

Then the President congratulated all Russian military seamen and shipbuilders on a major milestone event.

— Today in Severodvinsk, a new multipurpose nuclear submarine Perm is launched on the legendary Sevmash. We are continuing the serial production of modern missile submarines, and this is the fifth nuclear submarine of the Yasen-M project. Next year, it should become part of the Navy and begin performing combat missions," Vladimir Putin said.

He noted that the Perm became the first multi-purpose submarine armed with Zircon hypersonic missiles.

"We have continued and will continue to strengthen the Navy, including its strategic component, and generally increase the pace and volume of construction of surface and submarine ships of various projects, equipping them with the latest weapons, equipment, and communications equipment," Vladimir Putin said.

According to the president, such submarines will strengthen the power of all our fleets, strengthen the security of Russia's maritime borders and the Northern Sea Route, and ensure that national interests are protected in various areas of the world's oceans, including the Arctic zone.

The Perm submarine of the 885M project is the sixth submarine of the 885 Yasen and 885 Yasen-M families, Dmitry Kornev, editor of the Military Russia website, told Izvestia.

— In total, it is planned to build at least ten submarines of this project, — said the military expert. — These are nuclear-powered attack ships, which are more correctly called multi-purpose. They are equipped with both torpedo and missile systems: she has eight vertical launch rocket launchers and ten torpedo tubes. The Perm differs from the previous boats of the project in that it has more advanced launchers that can use Zircon missiles. All subsequent Yaseni-M will be able to use these missiles.

This is the most modern Russian nuclear submarine and the most advanced in terms of noise, the expert noted.

— It is at the level of the best world samples, — Dmitry Kornev noted. — With the construction of this series of boats, the capabilities of the Russian Navy will change significantly and become more serious. This boat can operate anywhere in the world ocean, there are no restrictions for it.

Modernization benefits military equipment, as it increases combat potential, said Igor Kurdin, the head of the club of submariners, Captain of the first rank Igor Kurdin.

"Perm is equipped with the latest Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, which significantly enhance its combat capabilities," he explained. — At one time, similar submarines were on combat duty in the Mediterranean Sea. From there, strikes could strike almost anywhere in Europe.

The submarines of this project are designed to solve a wide range of tasks, Ilya Kramnik, a researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia.

— These submarines can fight enemy submarines, protect their missile submarines in their areas of duty, and attack targets on the surface. The fight against aircraft—carrying strike groups is almost their main purpose," he noted. — These boats carry a variety of missile weapons, from anti—ship to Kalibr-type strategic cruise missiles. In addition, Perm is the first boat of the 885M project, which from the very beginning had the possibility of firing Zircon hypersonic missiles. Subsequent boats in the series will also receive these features. Earlier ones will also be able to use them, but after retrofitting. Overall, this is a very good, challenging boat. I wish there were more of them and they could be built faster. There is a lot to grow in this direction.

The Yasen series of multipurpose submarines of the fourth generation began to be created in 1993. The construction of the lead ship took two decades. It was only in 2014 that the Severodvinsk boat was transferred to the fleet. The next production ships are being built according to the already upgraded 885M Yasen-M project. The submarines are equipped with torpedoes and modern cruise missiles and can strike not only surface and submarines, but also land targets. They can use supersonic Onyx missiles to destroy ships, and Calibres are designed to strike land targets.

Today, five ships of the Yasen project are in service. Severodvinsk, Kazan and Arkhangelsk serve in the Northern Fleet. Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk are part of the Pacific Fleet.

How is the fleet's submarine forces being upgraded

In December last year, the chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Army General Valery Gerasimov, announced that in 2024 the Russian navy had received 38 ships, combat boats and support vessels, including a multi—purpose nuclear submarine and small rocket ships carrying high-precision long-range weapons.

Perm's predecessor, the fifth in a series of Project 885M Arkhangelsk submarines, joined the Northern Fleet on December 27.

On January 31 last year, the first serial non-nuclear submarine of the Kronshtadt project 677, armed with Kalibr cruise missiles, was added to the 161st submarine brigade of the Northern Fleet.

In October, another boat of the Yakutsk project 636 was decommissioned from the workshops of the Admiralty Shipyards and launched. This is the sixth submarine for the 19th Submarine Brigade of the Pacific Fleet, and its entry into the Navy is planned this year.

In February last year, the eighth strategic missile submarine of Project 955A, the Prince Pozharsky, was withdrawn from the Sevmash boathouse. The boat is still being tested and is due to be accepted into the Navy in June this year.
