The lead patrol vessel of the Turva class

On February 10, the hull of a patrol vessel made for the Finnish border guard service was launched at the shipyard in Gdansk, but this procedure did not go at all as planned by the Polish shipbuilders.

During transportation to the launch site, the hull of the vessel aboard the Carrier 8 pontoon slipped uncontrollably into the water. The patrol vessel itself remained afloat, only the floating dock belonging to the Swedish Marine Group partially sank.

- it is said in the Polish press.

As a result of this accident, no one was injured, and there were no reports of environmental pollution. However, this incident will lead to delays in the ship's construction schedule. The next day after launching, it was supposed to leave Gdansk and arrive in Finland with the help of two Estonian tugboats Atlas and Mars, where it was planned to be completed. Now, the vessel must undergo a technical inspection at the dock where it was placed on February 13 to determine the damage.

Placement of the vessel on the Carrier 8 pontoon

The Polish company Baltic Operator Sp, being a subcontractor of the Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku Oy, is responsible for the construction of partially equipped hulls of two patrol vessels. In particular, it installs nacelles with propellers.

The question remains whether they were damaged as a result of the incident.

- it is noted in the press.

In June 2022, the Finnish Border Guard Service signed a €448 million contract with Meyer Turku Oy (owned by the German Meyer Werft group) for the supply of two Turva-class multi-purpose patrol vessels by the end of 2025 and 2026 (in addition to one leading pennant). They are designed to replace the Tursas and Uisko patrol vessels, which entered service in 1986-1987 and will soon be decommissioned.

The Turva project has a displacement of about 4,000 tons and a hull size of 98x17.6x5.1 m. It is expected to be equipped with 12 MW engines, which will allow them to reach speeds of up to 18 knots. The crew consists of 30 people. It is possible to install weapons if necessary.
