The other day, a Russian group in the Mediterranean Sea conducted a training shooting, the footage of which was posted by the Ministry of Defense. In particular, they depict the ship launch of the hypersonic missile "Zircon", which is capable of flying 1000 km at a speed of Mach 9.

These images allowed us to study in more detail a little-known Russian missile. There is no doubt that the United States and NATO also closely monitored these maneuvers and may have received a lot of new high-quality information about the Zircon and other systems

- it is said in the Western press.

As indicated, from various angles it can be seen how the missile exits the 3C14 VPU into 16 cells located on the deck of the frigate project 22350. It rises up, stabilizing its position by controlling the thrust vector, and then continues to move along a vertical trajectory, after which the frame ends.

But there are still questions about how it works.

- it is noted in the publication.

According to the author, the two-stage weapon has a nose fairing, which probably hides an annular air intake that feeds the main engine after separating the first stage responsible for acceleration:

A similar approach was used in Boeing's HyFly, a hypersonic cruise missile demonstrator with a ramjet engine.

As he points out, it can be seen from the frames that the "Zircon" has the same dimensions as the "Onyx". At the same time, their flight speeds are not comparable, amounting to Mach 9 and Mach 2.2, respectively. Similar dimensions make it easier to launch the Zircon from the same ground-based PU, from which, according to the author, it has already been fired at targets in Ukraine.

Despite the new footage, the Zircon remains a mysterious weapon in many ways, accurate information about the principle of its operation and characteristics has not yet been confirmed

- the conclusion is made in the US press.
