The drone from the Abrams killer family is "effective in training UAV operators and storming complex objects
In Russia, the Piranha 5 FPV drone has been developed and launched into the series, which will help UAV operators master the basics of piloting. With its help, trainees will gain management skills in dynamic conditions and adapt to real tasks. In addition, the novelty can be used in a combat situation — during the work of assault groups, experts say. This model continues the line of drones of the famous Piranhas family, one of which destroyed the first American Abrams tank in its zone.
How UAV operators are trained
The Piranha 5 FPV drone will become a "flying desk" for future operators of FPV drones and copter-type UAVs. Due to its small size — just over 12 cm in diameter — it is more maneuverable than larger devices. This helps students to master the basics of piloting easier and faster and acquire and consolidate all the necessary skills. This was told to Izvestia by the head of public relations at SKB Piranha.
The maximum flight speed is 220 km/ h, which helps to gain control skills in dynamic conditions and adapt to real tasks.
In addition, a fairly simple drone design will help operators to study the device and the main components of the aircraft — to master their repair.

As military expert Roman Shkurlatov told Izvestia, the range of unmanned vehicles that Russian fighters use today is very wide.
— And the ceiling in the development of drones has not yet been reached, — he noted. — Any new items are welcome now. Especially those that are applicable for training new pilots and expanding the intelligence sector. At the moment, the proven Mavic and larger UAVs are popular. FPV drones are more often used for reconnaissance, as they are more maneuverable, allow you to fly into small window and door openings, basements.
According to the expert, today the winner on the battlefield is the one who takes a step forward from the enemy, including in technical solutions.
Using drones during an assault
The developers believe that due to its low weight — only 300 g — and high payload, the Piranha 5 can be used when storming objects with limited space.
— Despite its modest weight and size, the UAV can lift a 1.5 kg battery, which is used for the Piranha 10 FPV drone. And its payload reaches about 1 kg. Although usually such drones lift 200-400 grams, — said the representative of the company.
According to him, this drone is best suited for performing tasks within a radius of 1-3 km.

— A soldier can take three or four birds with him on a mission. "Piranha 5" is a pocket drone, — explained to Izvestia the tester of new products on its own from SKB Piranha. — All you need is to get the FPV drone already equipped and fly to view the forest plantation, trench or communication path. If the desired object was found, then destroy it, if not— return it back, put it in your pocket and continue to perform tasks.
In his opinion, the mini-drone is effective in cleaning rooms — both for viewing and for striking the right targets.
The use of UAVs in the work of assault groups has great prospects, but the tactics of their use on the battlefield are much more difficult than storming an apartment. This was told to Izvestia by Sergey Kurapov, a researcher at the MGUTU Department for Research Activities.

— First of all, we need a special operator skill, - he noted. — Flying into buildings, between trees in a forest belt and in a trench requires special training. Preparing operators for such actions is more difficult than usual. Secondly, when working on a target, ammunition weighing from 600 g is effective.
Taking into account these factors, according to the expert, Piranha 5 is suitable in its characteristics to support the work of attack aircraft, however, it must be taken into account that by launching a drone from a position 1-3 km from the place of use, the operator is seriously at risk, since it can be detected by an enemy Mavic, and a mine or an enemy drone.
A course on working with UAVs has been developed for schoolchildren

He will be included in the program of initial military training, which has appeared in high school students since 2023.

There, students will be taught not only piloting, but also design, programming and, of course, countering drones. The course can easily be integrated into the school curriculum, as it is divided into those subjects that already exist. Part of the clock is introduced into the subject of computer science, part — into the subject of technology, part — into everyday life.
According to Daria Borisova, director of the Avangard Educational and Methodological Center, an agreement was recently signed between the center and the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, which will facilitate the implementation of this program in higher education institutions.
