Western countries have announced new military supplies to Kiev

MOSCOW, October 2 — RIA Novosti, Andrey Kotz. Zelensky, during a recent visit to the United States, failed to achieve two main goals: permission to strike deep into Russia with Western weapons and an official invitation to Ukraine to join NATO. Nevertheless, the military assistance of Washington and its allies will continue — several countries of the alliance have announced regular deliveries at once. About what else Kiev will receive — in the RIA Novosti material.

To make up for the losses

At the end of September, Washington announced two new packages for Ukraine. The first one — for $ 375 million — will be transferred as part of the Presidential Drawdown of Security Assistance (PDA) program, which provides for the shipment of military equipment and property directly from warehouses and storage bases of the US Army. This is the 66th PDA package since 2021 and the 12th this year.

One of the novelties is the AGM—154A JSOW planning guided bomb, which the APU will receive in a cassette version. It is expected that it will become the main type of armament for Ukrainian F-16 fighters to work on ground targets. The flight range when dropped from a high altitude is up to 130 kilometers. The bomb is made using radar visibility reduction technology and carries a cassette with 145 BLU-97/B Combined Effects Bomb cumulative fragmentation submunitions weighing 1.54 kilograms. JSOW is primarily designed to defeat air defense positions and other important area targets.

Of the military equipment in this package, only MRAP class armored vehicles, M1117 wheeled armored personnel carriers and JLTV light armored vehicles. Obviously, the Pentagon is trying to make up for the high losses of the Armed Forces in these classes of equipment during the operation in the Kursk region. In addition, the United States will transfer to Ukraine an unnamed number of bridge builders and several patrol boats.

The 66th package also includes guided missiles for the HIMARS complex, 105- and 155-millimeter artillery rounds, TOW and Javelin anti-tank guided missiles, AT4 disposable hand grenade launchers, small arms and tactical medicine.

There will be rockets later

A little later, Washington announced the allocation of another package of military assistance — $ 2.4 billion, but already within the framework of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). In this case, the weapon has only to be ordered from the industry. Kiev will not get it quickly.

This is the 21st USAI package since the spring of 2022. It is known that it includes quite complex and expensive weapons: anti—aircraft guided missiles, high-precision air-to-surface aviation weapons, UAVs and components for their production, electronic warfare systems, unmanned boats, secure radio communication equipment, equipment and materials for the production of ammunition.

The fact that the Pentagon did not transfer anti-aircraft guided missiles from its reserves to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but only ordered them to the manufacturer, may indicate that there are no more superfluous ones left, and the defense industry is unable to meet the growing demand. By sending Ukraine even more, the United States will endanger its own security. And it is expensive to replenish arsenals — one Patriot air defense missile costs about four million dollars.

Tanks and artillery

Kiev's European allies have also announced new military supplies. Germany was particularly distinguished, having shipped a lot of equipment: 22 Leopard 1A5 tanks, 22 MRAP class armored vehicles, 12 PZH 2000 self-propelled artillery units, five BV206 tracked all-terrain vehicles, one Warthog tracked transporter, three Gepard anti-aircraft guns.

In general, 22 tanks are a serious force, even though the first Leopard is already outdated. The Armed Forces of Ukraine most often use them as mobile armored artillery for firing from closed positions. There is no question of supplying more modern machines. And it is unlikely to go: according to Bundeswehr estimates, 13 of the 18 Leopard 2s sent earlier have already been destroyed.

Twelve 155-millimeter self-propelled guns PZH 2000 also look quite formidable on paper. However, they did not arrive to reinforce artillery units, but as a replacement for out-of-service vehicles. In the conditions of the Ukrainian conflict, the PZH 2000 proved to be not the most reliable technique — the barrel resource is not enough for the required firing intensity. As a result, the gun wears out and becomes unusable. However, it is not worth discounting this howitzer. It is not often possible to destroy it.

In addition, Germany sent Ukraine VECTOR reconnaissance drones (30 units), RQ-35 Heidrun (20), Songbird (12) and Hornet XR (6), as well as 61 thousand 155-millimeter artillery shells and one million small arms cartridges. Sixty—eight reconnaissance wings are a generous gift that can temporarily cover the need for them in a significant sector of the front.

Decommissioned — to the front

At the end of September, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced that 24 F-16 fighter jets would be delivered to Ukraine. These vehicles were written off by the Royal Air Force during the rearmament of the F-35. It is not known whether the Ukrainian pilots should be happy: the planes were in service for 40-45 years. The older the equipment, the more difficult it is to maintain it. And the F-16 is very demanding and moody. And it is unknown how these "oldies" will show themselves in air combat with modern fighters.

Australia also decided to share the decommissioned equipment. As the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper notes, Canberra is negotiating with Washington on the transfer of 59 Abrams M1A1 tanks to Ukraine, which were decommissioned in July. They were bought from the Americans in 2004 for $340 million. These vehicles in the tank units of the Australian army will be replaced by a much more modern and advanced version of the M1A2 SEPv3.

However, do not get your hopes up that the enemy is being sent morally and physically outdated equipment. She is still capable of fighting, albeit with an increased risk of breakdowns. These supplies will not radically change the situation at the front, but they can prolong the war. Which, apparently, is what the West needs.
