TASS-DOSSIER. On September 27, 2024, the Admiral Isakov frigate of Project 22350, under construction for the Russian Navy, was launched at the Severnaya Verf plant in St. Petersburg.

TASS has prepared a material about this type of warships.

Basic information

The ships of Project 22350 are a series of Russian multipurpose frigates (patrol ships) of the far sea zone. The project was developed at the Northern Design Bureau (St. Petersburg) in the first half of the 2000s. This is the first large warship designed in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Project history

The need to develop and build new frigates was due to the fact that in the mid-2000s The Russian Navy had an urgent need to upgrade its ship's complement. The average age of surface ships was about 20 years, and the simultaneous presence of different types of combat units of the same class in service caused major problems with supply and repair - for example, at that time the Russian fleet consisted of eight patrol ships of seven different projects. The first contract for the construction of the frigate project 22350 was signed by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation with the St. Petersburg shipyard Severnaya Verf on October 21, 2005. Subsequently, two more contracts were signed with the same company: on March 25, 2010 (for three ships) and March 17, 2011 (by four).

On December 12, 2014, the commander-in-chief of the Navy, Admiral Viktor Chirkov, told reporters that in the future the fleet expects to receive frigates of the 22350M modification. On December 11, 2023, the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, announced that the series of frigates of the 22350 project, carrying hypersonic Zircon missiles, will consist of 10 ships, including existing ones.

Purpose and features

The patrol ship of the project 22350 is designed to destroy surface ships, ships and ground facilities of the enemy, patrol, patrol and guard maritime communications, anti-submarine and air defense.

The main power plant is a diesel-gas turbine. The engines for the first two frigates (including the Admiral of the Fleet Kasatonov) were supplied by the Ukrainian enterprise Zorya-Mashproekt (Gorod Nikolaev). The manufacture and supply of diesel-gas turbine units for the remaining production ships is carried out by PJSC ODK-Saturn (Rybinsk, Yaroslavl region).

Armament

The frigate's armament includes launchers of Kalibr or Onyx anti-ship missiles, the Poliment-Redut anti-aircraft missile system, the Paket-NK anti-submarine torpedo system, and an artillery installation. The Ka-27 helicopter can be based on the ship.

Project Ships

  • The lead frigate of project 22350 is Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov (serial number - 921).
