"The main problem of the aircraft has been solved": a Chinese J-20A fighter jet is seen with WS-15 engines

Chinese developers have not been able to bring the new WS-15 engine to a technologically acceptable level, despite many years of project implementation. This powerplant is designed for the newest 5th generation fighter J-20A and without it, he could not unleash all the potential inherent in the aircraft.

However, a photo of a J-20A equipped with WS-15 was recently seen, which means a major technological breakthrough for China.

The main problem of the aircraft has been solved. It is expected that the new turbofan engine of national development will provide the unobtrusive fighter with excellent performance

As indicated, the J-20A is an improved single–seat version of the basic version of the J-20, which has a modified fuselage shape, including a nose cone, a deeper protrusion and a slightly raised cockpit, and also provides for the possibility of installing WS-15 engines. The additional space in the tail section is probably intended to accommodate additional avionics and/or fuel.

The WS-15 is expected to significantly narrow the gap between Chinese fighter jets and their latest Western counterparts.

The J-20 prototypes and the first production samples were equipped with Russian-made AL–31 turbofan engines, followed by Chinese WS-10 series units with a maximum thrust of 14.5 to 15.9 tons with afterburner. The WS-15 prototypes were capable of producing at least 16.3 tons of thrust with an afterburner with the ultimate goal of reaching 18.1 tons.

It is noteworthy that while variants of the WS-10 with thrust vector-changing nozzles were developed, the WS-15, at least in its current form, is equipped with a standard nozzle.

Potentially, this performance improvement could mean that the J-20A develops more thrust than the F-22 Raptor, the only comparable 5th generation fighter currently widely used on the front line

The F-22 is equipped with two Pratt Whitney F119s, each of which develops a power of about 15.9 tons at full afterburner.

According to the author, although questions may remain regarding the fuel efficiency and maintenance requirements of the WS-15, especially the time between major repairs, the key advantage it provides is thrust, which may well "bring the J-20A into the elite group of modern fighters." It makes it possible to take an advantageous position faster than the enemy and probably increases the air ceiling.

The Pentagon's report on China's military power for 2023 says that the J-20 can gain supercruiser capabilities due to WS-15 engines.

As noted in the publication, the development of modern high-performance jet engines has long been the Achilles heel of China's aerospace industry. Many of the Air Force's key aircraft types have long relied on Russian powerplants.
