At the end of the 2010s, OKB Technika proposed a line of Sarmat all-terrain vehicles for the needs of the Airborne Forces, designated as LSTS – a light special vehicle. These were small-sized high-terrain vehicles of a doorless type, and in a number of modifications with an open top. However, by now this project has undergone major changes.
In August, a new lightly armored version was introduced under the designation STS Sarmat-3. The 4x4 vehicle has a combat weight of 3.5 tons and is capable of carrying a load not exceeding 100 kg in an unprotected cargo compartment. It is also possible to place cargo weighing 900 kg or 4 fighters inside the body. The 4-cylinder diesel engine with a capacity of 150 hp is capable of speeds up to 120 km/ h, with a range of about 500 km.
There is a turret on the roof, which can be mounted with 7.62 x 54 mm or 12.7 x 108mm machine guns, automatic grenade launchers AGS-17 or ATGM "Kornet".
There is an extended version under the designation STS "Sarmat-3ME", designed to perform medical evacuation tasks. Inside there are a doctor and an orderly, as well as two seats or two stretchers for the wounded. This version has the same characteristics in terms of combat weight and speed, but the load capacity is reduced to 700 kg by increasing the armored surface.
Thus, Sarmat, having turned an all-terrain vehicle into a light armored vehicle, is developing along the path of increasing security. However, it should be borne in mind that the front requires different equipment, which is confirmed by the active use of the same Chinese doorless Desertcross all-terrain vehicles.
