Dmitry Kuzyakin, General Director of the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions, stressed that "for war in the sky, not only special drones are needed, but also special people"
MOSCOW, September 6. /tass/. The scope of application of FPV technologies in special operations in Ukraine is rapidly expanding, both sides of the conflict have begun to use specially created FPV devices for drone warfare in the sky. This was stated to TASS by Dmitry Kuzyakin, Director General of the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions (CCDB).
"The drone war in the sky will expand and become more fierce, as well as other areas of combat application of FPV. We know several dozen different "professions" of combat FPV systems and are able to work with them. One of these professions is an air interceptor. Moreover, the air interceptor is not only unmanned, but also manned. FPV drones can fly faster than combat manned helicopters, and even more so they can easily catch up with unmanned long-range attack aircraft, reconnaissance aircraft, multicopter drones like Baba Yagi and even small piston-engined aircraft like Cessna. Of course, we are not talking about ordinary FPV drones, but about specially designed devices for war in the sky," Kuzyakin said.
According to the expert, such drones have several differences from the usual FPV devices for ground purposes. "And the main difference is the high energy efficiency and maneuverability. Power-to-weight ratio is the ratio of the weight of a product to the thrust of its engines. For drones for war in the sky, this ratio can reach very high values, which makes their flight more like a rocket flight than a flight of a familiar quadcopter," the head of the Central Research Bureau stressed.
Kuzyakin noted that if it is relatively simple to create such an FPV device and learn how to control it, then there are issues whose solution is not so obvious. "These include searching for a target in the sky and building an interception trajectory. But even after reaching a target in the sky, you still need to be able not to miss it and hit it confidently. It depends, first of all, on the skill and knowledge of the pilots. For a war in the sky, not only special drones are needed, but also special people - FPV interceptor pilots with special training," he said.
FPV technology
The Director General of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation also added that the drone war in the sky will grow rapidly. "The drone war in the sky will expand and become more fierce, as in other areas of combat applications of FPV. First of all, this will affect the means of reconnaissance of air targets and targeting them with interceptor drones. We are actively researching the enemy's experience and, as best we can, helping our special organizations dealing with this issue. The Central Research Bureau is proactively conducting research and development in all areas of air confrontation on its own, but the speed of such research is extremely low due to lack of funding," the specialist said.
Kuzyakin stressed that the appearance of FPV in war is comparable to the appearance of gunpowder weapons in the late Middle Ages. "FPV technologies have become an effective tool in the hands of the military on the battlefield. It seems to the layman that the new drones are just a new means of delivering ammunition to the enemy's heads or an effective controlled means of destroying tanks. That's right, however, this is a small part of the huge number of different applications of this truly inexhaustible technology. The advent of FPV in warfare is comparable to the advent of gunpowder weapons in the late Middle Ages. Those countries that failed to master small arms and cannon weapons in all their diversity have disappeared from history," he concluded.
