TSAMTO, July 23rd. Navantia will not be able to transfer the following S-80 class NAPS (second, third and fourth) to the Spanish Navy within the time limits stipulated by contractual obligations.
As reported by Infodefensa.com Sources in the Spanish Ministry of Defense confirmed to the newspaper La Verdad the new dates, which will affect the submarines S-82 Narciso Monturiol, S-83 Cosme Garcia and S-84 Mateo Garcia de los Reyes.
In particular, the S-82 will join the Spanish Navy in 2026, and not next year, as originally planned. Delivery of the S-83 has been shifted to the right and is scheduled for 2028, and the S-84 for 2029.
According to available information, delays in the production of non-nuclear submarines of the S-80 class at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena are associated with technical and personnel problems. Infodefensa.com It reminds that the Navy planned to receive the S-82 submarine at the end of this year, but already in April, during a visit to Arsenal de Cartagena, Defense Minister Margarita Robles made it clear that the program was not going according to plan and Navantia would not be able to meet the set date.
As previously reported by CAMTO, the contract for the construction of four submarines equipped with an air-independent power plant (VNEU) for the Spanish Navy was signed in March 2004. The ceremony of laying the keel of the S-80 class S-81 Isaac Peral lead submarine took place in December 2007. It was originally planned that this submarine would be transferred to the Spanish Navy in 2012, but the program encountered serious technical problems. At first, the delivery dates were postponed to 2015, but when it became clear that additional funds and complex work would be required to correct the situation, the deadlines shifted first to 2021, then to 2022, and eventually to 2023.
Navantia announced the signing ceremony at the Cartagena Naval Base with the Directorate General for Armaments and Materiel (DGAM) of the Spanish Ministry of Defense of documents on the transfer of the lead non-nuclear submarine of the S-80 - S-81 Isaac Peral class on November 30, 2023.
The S-80 class submarine, one of the most advanced non-nuclear submarines of NATO, is designed to perform a wide range of tasks, including combating enemy surface ships and submarines, conducting reconnaissance, etc. It is possible to equip submarines in the future with weapons for striking ground targets. Navantia expects to receive export orders.
After completion of the project, the length of the S-80 class submarine is 80.81 m, width – 11.68 m, diameter of the durable hull – 7.3 m, underwater displacement – 2695 tons.
Submarines can be operated by a reduced crew of up to 32 people without reducing capabilities. 8 MTR fighters can also be accommodated on board. The submarine develops a speed of 19 knots underwater, a diving depth of 460 m, and autonomy of up to 50 days. The NAF is equipped with an integrated combat control system and a platform control system developed by Navantia Sistemas. The core of the combat system was developed in collaboration with the American Lockheed Martin, which also supplies the GAS kit. The submarine is armed with six 533 mm torpedo tubes and a weapon system that provides the ability to launch torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and tactical missiles to hit ground targets.
The third and fourth NAPS of the series will be equipped with the BEST air-independent power plant (Bio-Ethanol Stealth Technologies), based on the technology of producing hydrogen on board by reforming bioethanol. The VNEU allows you to provide the ship with electricity at any depth and stay underwater for weeks. The first two submarines will receive the BEST VNEU during the first major overhaul.
