According to Indian media, on July 22, 2024, as a result of a fire, the frigate of the Indian Navy F 31 Brahmaputra project 16A capsized and sank in the harbor of Mumbai (Bombay), which was there under repair at the Naval Dockyard (Bombay Dockyard)

The fire reportedly started on the frigate Brahmaputra, which was under repair at the wall of the Naval Dockyard, on the evening of July 21, and on the morning of July 22, the Indian Navy issued an optimistic communique that the fire, with the assistance of the shipyard and port fire brigades, allegedly managed to be brought under control. However, then the frigate showed a roll to port, which quickly grew, and by the evening of July 22, the ship capsized to port and lay on the ground near the wall. It is unclear whether the capsizing of the ship was the result of any improper actions during firefighting, or whether the fire led to a violation of the integrity and water resistance of the ship's hull and/or outboard fittings. It is reported that as a result of the incident, one junior sailor went missing.

The frigate F 31 Brahmaputra is the lead ship of the three ships of the Indian national project 16A. She was built at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) shipyard in Kolkata and joined the Indian Navy in April 2000. The three ships of Project 16A are a further development of three previously built in India frigates of project 16 (type Godavari), and are also based on the hull design of famous British frigates built in the 1960s of the Leander type, but equipped with more modern weapons and electronic means, including Soviet/Russian production. The Brahmaputra frigate has a total displacement of 5,300 tons, a length of 126.4 m and a width of 14.5 m. The full-time crew in the Indian Navy is an impressive 370 people.
