At the Paris Eurosatory 2024 exhibition, France presented a new modification of the Leclerc XLR tank, which is being presented as a new generation of the already well-known MBT.
- they declare in the KNDS concern.
Western observers described the new machine as "the pinnacle of French engineering and military strategy." Developed by Nexter Systems, the Leclerc XLR is a key component of the French SCORPION program aimed at modernizing armored forces. As the command plans, it will act as the "backbone" of mechanized formations throughout the 2040s.
The new MBT was first announced in March 2015 and has since undergone extensive upgrades. The 501st Tank Regiment of the French army recently received the first batch of these vehicles, which marked the beginning of their deliveries to the troops.

The 120/52 mm smoothbore gun from Giat, which has the designation CN 120-26, remained in service. It can fire armor-piercing feathered sub-caliber and cumulative anti-tank shells. The integration of the new HE M3M OFFS with a programmable detonation is currently underway. In addition to the main gun, the XLR is also equipped with a 12.7mm twin machine gun and a DUMV with a 7.62mm machine gun.
In the new modification, the MBT is equipped with an advanced modular armor complex, including additional passive armor in front and on the sides of the hull and turret. The lattice armor protects the stern.
As the manufacturer explains, with a combat weight of 57 tons, the XLR retains a balanced profile with dimensions designed for optimal combat characteristics: 9.87 m in length, 3.71 m in width and 2.53 m in height.

The car is equipped with a 1,500 hp SACM V8X-1500 Hyperbar diesel engine, paired with a SESM ESM 500 automatic transmission. This configuration provides a maximum speed of 72 km/h on the road and 50 km/h off-road, and a power reserve of 615 km (instead of the current 450-550 km). The tank's suspension system, consisting of six support rollers on each side, allows it to overcome vertical obstacles with a height of 1.25 m and cross trenches with a width of 3 m, while maintaining maneuverability in various areas of the terrain.
The Leclerc XLR is equipped with an open electronics architecture and a new so-called "software-defined" tactical radio Contact, ensuring uninterrupted coordination on the battlefield. The SCORPION Information and Command System (SICS) increases awareness of the situation, while the mine jamming device Barage and the integrated laser warning system provide reliable protective capabilities. Advanced thermal imagers and laser rangefinders increase the accuracy of targeting even in difficult conditions.
The Leclerc XLR, presented at Eurosatory 2024, is equipped with a number of UAV protection devices. In particular, a remotely controlled combat station is able to deal with this type of threat.
