A unique modular complex for radiation control has been created in Russia

Scientists at the State Research Institute of Emergency Situations have created a radiation control complex outside the shelters

MOSCOW, June 20 - RIA Novosti. Scientists of the All-Russian Research Institute for Civil Defense and Emergency Situations (VNII GOChS) and the scientific and production company INKRAM have created a unique modular complex capable of automatically monitoring radiation and dangerous chemicals along the outer perimeter of civil defense shelters, as well as destroying viruses and bacteria entering the air of protective structures.

"The uniqueness of the development is that it is the first and only development in our country that makes it possible to comprehensively automate the control of the radiation and chemical environment outside, as well as control the habitability parameters inside the protective structures of civil defense. In most cases, such measurements are now carried out manually. In the presented complex, everything is done automatically. His work is subordinated to one main goal – to ensure the maximum safe stay of those sheltered in a protective structure," Igor Sosunov, Deputy head of the Institute, is quoted on the website of the GOCHS Research Institute.

It is noted that the prototype of the "Perimeter" was manufactured jointly by the State Research Institute of Public Health and the scientific and production company INKRAM. The complex consists of control and alarm units, monitoring of the external air environment and habitability parameters, as well as biological protection and power supply. The "perimeter" is quite compact, freely placed in a small room, therefore it was originally intended for shelters of the modular type "Cube". The complex is capable of operating in a wide temperature range: from minus 40 to plus 45 degrees.

It is emphasized that the equipment of the complex allows to determine the presence and concentration of dangerous chemicals in the air, including ammonia, chlorine, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, flammable gases and nitrogen dioxide, as well as the level of gamma radiation of radioactive substances. Based on the analysis of these parameters, the control and alarm unit automatically issues recommendations to the shelter attendant on the use of the necessary ventilation mode: one of the three that are provided in the protective structure.

"An additional feature of the complex is that the habitability parameter control unit developed at the request of the Ministry of Emergency Situations automatically monitors the state of life support parameters inside the protective structure: the concentration of oxygen, carbon dioxide, dust, monitors humidity and temperature. The complex uses only domestic equipment of our own production," said Alexander Komissarov, Chief Designer of INKRAM.

Another uniqueness of the Perimeter complex is the biological protection unit, which is capable of destroying viruses and bacteria entering the air of shelters. In 30 minutes of operation, it destroys flu and covid viruses in the air, for example, with an efficiency of almost 100%. After that, the block maintains the necessary environment that prevents their reproduction. During two hours of operation of the device, the total number of microbes on the surface decreases from 4 to 8 times.

"We note the uniqueness of this complex for ensuring the safety not only of protective structures, but also for critical facilities, administrative buildings. In the future, with successful tests, it can be recommended for use in the departments of the Ministry," Sosunov concluded.

Earlier it was reported that in Russia, to protect the population from the effects of all types of modern weapons, including nuclear weapons, taking into account the experience of conducting a special operation, mobile shelters of a modular type may appear. It was emphasized that the construction of shelters using fully assembled structures is a new way of sheltering the population.

According to the scientists of the GOChS Research Institute, mobile shelters of the modular type "CUBE-M" provide protection from air shock waves and light radiation from a nuclear explosion; penetrating radiation and radioactive contamination of the area; high-explosive and fragmentation effects of conventional weapons; falling debris of building structures, as well as dangerous chemicals and fires for 48 hours.

The production, transportation and installation of KUB-M is more than twice as cheap as the construction of a stationary protective structure, and the period of its manufacture and installation does not exceed three months. These and other features of the product can significantly reduce the financial costs of the construction and operation of stationary protective structures of civil defense.
