TSAMTO, May 21st. The Italian company Fincantieri announced the launch ceremony of the integrated supply ship LSS (Logistic Support Ship), "Atlanta", held at the enterprise in Castellammare di Stabia (Naples).
The Atlante is the second integrated supply ship to be transferred to the Italian Navy. The first ship of the series, Vulcano, was delivered to the customer in 2021. The laying of the keel of the Atlante took place on June 29, 2023. It is planned that it will be transferred to the Italian Navy in 2025,
As reported by CAMTO, the construction of LSS ships is carried out within the framework of the long-term restoration program of the Italian Navy implemented since the beginning of 2015. The program initially provided for the construction of a universal amphibious assault ship (UDC), up to 10 PPA patrol ships, two high-speed multi-purpose ships for special operations and one support ship (LSS). In addition to the construction of ships, Fincantieri will provide their maintenance for the first ten years, training of personnel, supply of spare parts, as well as provide technical documentation.
Contracts for the construction of the first LSS support ship and 6 PPA patrol ships (with an option for four more) in May 2015 were signed on behalf of the Italian Navy by the European Organization for Cooperation in the Field of Armaments (OCCAR) with the RTI consortium (Raggruppamento Temporaneo di Impresa), formed by Fincantieri and Leonardo. The Trieste UDC was ordered in July 2015. In November 2015, OCCAR signed a contract with RTI for the supply of the seventh PPA ship, having implemented the first option to the basic agreement.
Steel cutting for the construction of the lead integrated supply ship, A5335 Vulcano, began in February 2016. He was transferred to the Italian Navy Command on March 12, 2021.
In December 2021, OCCAR signed a contract with the RTI consortium worth about 410 million euros ($464 million, including the combat system) for the construction of a second LSS ship. The ship is being built at the shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, and its delivery is scheduled for 2025. The agreement includes an option to build a third ship of the series with support during the first ten years of operation.
LSS is designed for logistical support of fleet ships at sea, supply of diesel and jet fuel, food, ammunition, spare parts and fresh water, repair and maintenance of weapons and equipment.
The length of the ship is 193 m, width – 24 m, displacement – 27200 tons. The vessel is equipped with a CODLAD type GEU, can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots, a range of 7000 nautical miles at a speed of 16 knots, and a crew of 235 people. The LSS can be equipped with non-lethal weapons. If necessary, the ship can provide electricity and drinking water to land. A fully equipped hospital with an area of about 800 square meters will be located on board. m with two operating rooms, an X-ray machine, a CT scanner, a dentist's office, two emergency departments, a laboratory, an intensive care unit, a burn room. The ship can also serve as a base for rescue and repair work, be used for reconnaissance, electronic warfare and command of troops, allowing helicopters and special vessels to be received. The project provides for the installation of four replenishment stations at sea on the sides and one in the stern. The vessel can potentially be used in emergency response operations and humanitarian missions.
