Congress authorized the Pentagon to purchase 15 percent fewer F-35s

MOSCOW, May 20 — RIA Novosti, Andrey Igorev. The Pentagon is significantly reducing purchases of fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets. The car, despite its high-tech design, turned out to be too expensive and capricious to maintain. In particular, there were difficulties with updating the software. About some of the problems of the project — in the material of RIA Novosti.

Problems with the update

The Pentagon's proposed budget for fiscal year 2025 provided for the purchase of 68 fifth-generation fighters — 42 F-35A for the Air Force, 13 F-35B for the Navy and the same number of F-35C for the Marine Corps. With the cost of one aircraft of about $ 100 million, this is no less than almost seven billion. However, the congressmen cut the appetites of the military by 15 percent to 58 vehicles. The money for the remaining ten will be given when the Pentagon reports on overcoming numerous difficulties with the F-35 modernization program.

Congressmen were particularly displeased with the difficulties with the implementation of the Tech Refresh 3 update. Lockheed Martin has already launched the construction of aircraft in this configuration, but the customer is not ready to accept them yet. According to the plan, the first F-35 TR-3s were supposed to enter the Air Force by April 2023. However, the deadlines have been shifted.

Tech Refresh 3 provides for the replacement of part of the electronic and computing equipment, as well as software. A new central computer, power supply and related electronics have been developed and are being implemented. Due to this, they expect to achieve an increase in efficiency in solving all major tasks, which will have a positive effect on the combat qualities of the aircraft. However, the first upgraded cars turned out to be very damp. According to the glitch, its characteristics did not match the declared ones.

The Pentagon decided to postpone large-scale production and conduct another stage of testing. The finished F-35s were sent for storage. Their fate depends on the test results. At the same time, the timing of the next major F-35 Block 4 program is also shifting to the right, a number of technologies of which were worked out just at the Tech Refresh 3 project.

A bunch of malfunctions

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lighting II ("Lightning") is the second production fifth—generation fighter in the world after the F-22 Raptor. "Predators" built 187 units. The government considered further production unprofitable — the car turned out to be too expensive even for the United States.

The F-35 was conceived as a cheaper and more technologically advanced alternative. Nevertheless, the development of the "Lightning" did not cost much cheaper than the F-22: 55 against 66 billion dollars. At such costs, the thirty-fifth came out extremely raw and loses in combat capabilities not only to the Raptor, but also to many aircraft of the 4++ generation.

The first serious bell rang in 2011 at the tests of the prototype F-35C, a modification for the US Navy. The fighter failed to land on the deck simulator eight times in a row — it could not catch on the cables of the aircraft finisher. The reason was called serious constructive miscalculations. They were corrected only by significant modification of the machine. But the problems remained.

In early 2017, the Pentagon reported that 78 carrier-based fighter pilots complained of severe pain during takeoff from an aircraft carrier due to seat vibration. A video of the pilots banging their heads against the cockpit lantern got online. An expensive high-tech helmet for 400 thousand dollars even flew off one of them.

There were difficulties with the version of the fighter for the US Marine Corps. The F-35B has a shortened takeoff and vertical landing, thanks to a special fan engine behind the cockpit. Tests in 2015 showed the complete unavailability of the machine due to a number of errors made at the design stage.

In particular, due to the large weight of the additional powerplant, the flight range of the naval version is significantly lower than that of the basic F-35A - 1,670 kilometers versus 2,200. The same applies to the fuel reserve — six tons, not eight. The only Soviet production aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing suffered from similar "diseases" associated with a small combat radius — the Yak-38, which the Navy pilots, with their characteristic humor, dubbed the "mast protection fighter". In addition, the F-35B's wings do not fold, which makes it difficult to base it on ships.

A gold mine

There are also significant design flaws characteristic of all three modifications of the fighter. In 2015, the Pentagon was forced to ban pilots weighing up to 61 kilograms from flying these machines. The fact is that in the ejection seats of the pilots, created specifically for the F-35 by the British company Martin-Baker, during the tests, a malfunction was discovered that could lead to serious injury or even death of the pilot.

In addition, more than 150 units of the F-35 revealed a serious defect in the fuel system: the pressure relief valves were defective. Naturally, the details had to be changed, having "grounded" the entire Lightning fleet before that. Such measures were taken quite often. For example, in the summer of 2014, F-35 flights were suspended after two planes almost crashed in a week: one engine caught fire on takeoff, the second made an emergency landing due to a fuel leak.

The problems snowballed. In January 2019, Bloomberg published a Pentagon report on critical difficulties with the reliability and durability of the aircraft, the accuracy of weapons, and software. It turned out that many of the 60 F-35Bs are to be written off due to airframe fatigue damage, which occurred about four times ahead of schedule, and the high-tech coating, thanks to which the fighters are invisible to enemy radars, wears out faster than expected. And then it turned out that it was dangerous to perform supersonic interceptions on the F-35C — there is a risk of destruction of the tail section.

In January 2021, former acting US Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan bluntly called the F-35 program a failure. However, for the Lockheed Martin concern and many contractors, this aircraft is a gold mine. As well as for the White House, which is actively selling the "thirty-fifth" to allies. The Lightning will be purchased by Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway after the transfer of their F-16s to Ukraine. It was this car that was chosen as the main one for the Air Force by the United Kingdom, Israel, Italy, and Poland, the Czech Republic, Finland, Greece and Germany plan to purchase it in the near future. The F-35 will continue to bring serious money to the Americans, but no one knows how it will behave in real combat.
