On April 16, 2024, in the capital of Peru, Lima, a contract was signed between the shipbuilding and ship repair company Servicios Industriales de la Marina S.A. (SIMA Peru) of the Peruvian Navy and the South Korean shipbuilding corporation HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the construction of four frigate warships for the Peruvian fleet according to projects and with the assistance of HHI HDF-3400, a large patrol ship of the HDP-2200 project and two small landing ships of the HDL-1400 project. The signing of the contract worth 463 million dollars (460.6 billion won) was attended by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and members of the Peruvian government.

The selection of the South Korean HHI Corporation in the international tender for the Peruvian surface fleet renewal program was announced by the Ministry of Defense of Peru on March 27, 2024. It is assumed that all four contracted ships will be built by SIMA at its parent shipyard in Callao and should be handed over to the Peruvian Navy by 2030, and the total cost of their construction and armament will be about $ 1 billion.

In general, in the future, the Peruvian Navy plans to build a total of six frigates of the HDF-3400 project, four or five patrol ships of the HDP-2200 project and four small amphibious assault ships of the HDL-1400 project within 15 years. The new frigates and patrol ships should form the updated core of the Peruvian fleet, replacing the Italian Lupo-type frigates currently serving in this capacity.

The frigate of the HDF-3400 project is a variant of a series of typical export projects of HHI frigates and should have a normal displacement of 3,400 tons, a length of 127 m, a width of 14.9 m, a draft of 4 m, a full speed of 26.5 knots and a cruising range of 6,000 miles. The armament will be represented, apparently, by South Korean-made systems, including anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile systems and a 76-mm universal artillery installation.

The patrol ship of the HDP-2200 project has already been ordered by HHI in the amount of six units by the Philippines under the 2022 agreement. The ship designed for the Peruvian navy should have a normal displacement of 2,450 tons, a length of 94.4 m, a width of 14.3 m, a draft of 3.7 m, a full speed of 22 knots, a cruising range of 6,000 miles, and autonomy of 30 days. The armament in the version for the Peruvian Navy will be represented by a 30-mm artillery installation and two 12.7-mm machine guns. The Spanish company Escribano Mechanical and Engineering will supply combat modules with small-caliber weapons for the frigate and patrol ship. Both the frigate and the patrol ship must carry a heavy-duty helicopter (up to 14 tons) in the hangar.

The small amphibious assault ship of the HDL-1400 project should have a total displacement of 1400 tons, a length of 58 m, a width of 13.2 m, a full speed of 10 knots and a cruising range of 1,500 miles. The ship must carry up to seven armored vehicles or at least 20 TEU containers.

SIMA Peru already has extensive experience in cooperation with South Korean shipbuilding companies, having built in recent years two small amphibious helicopter dock ships Pisco and Paita for the Peruvian Navy (the second ship is under completion) according to the project and with the assistance of the South Korean corporation Dae Sun Shipbuilding & Engineering, and six small 500-ton ones for the Coast Guard of Peru patrol ships of the PGCP-50 type according to the project and with the assistance of the South Korean corporation STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (now K Shipbuilding). The Peruvian Navy also has two Pohang-type corvettes derived from the South Korean Navy.
