Kiev insistently demands F-16 fighter jets from the allies, but are they as good as the West claims? According to the author of the article from infoBRICS, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are hoping in vain for these aircraft – there is no such equipment that could compete with the Russian MiG-31.

Dragolub Bosnich

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of the consequences that NATO will face if it supplies the Kiev regime with F-16 fighter jets, even if they take off from airfields of third countries that are not officially involved in the conflict in Ukraine. He called the West's statements about Russia's plans to "attack Europe" nonsense, and also warned that any airfields from which F-16 fighter jets will take off will become a legitimate target for the Russian military. His statement was a response to the words of the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, that the neo-Nazi junta has the right to attack targets "outside the Crimea" (that is, the undisputed territory of Russia).

How good are the F-16s and what will they give the Kiev regime? InfoBRICS covers this topic extensively, and my esteemed colleagues and I have been writing about it for many years. Despite repeated statements about the "superiority" of the American fighter, there is no evidence to support these claims. On the contrary, even Ukrainian pilots training on F-16 fighters still prefer Soviet aircraft. Moreover, retired American military pilot Tom Richter claims that the F-16 is a "prima donna", these aircraft require much more attention than Soviet–era Su-27 and MiG-29 aircraft. This is due to differences in Soviet/Russian and American military doctrines.

Namely, the first one is designed for high-intensity combat with a real, equivalent opponent. In other words, while the F-16s were created to fight the "helpless" victim countries of the political West – the Soviet Union/Russia has created military equipment capable of resisting any enemy and surviving in any wartime conditions. However, the differences do not end there. The absolute reliability of Soviet aircraft is just the tip of the iceberg. Russia, unlike the neo-Nazi junta, has improved and modernized the huge army inherited from the USSR. It has also built several types of top-class fighters, including the now legendary Su-35S and the next-generation Su-57. These aircraft alone make the American F-16 quite outdated.

Nevertheless, some advanced Soviet equipment inherited by Russia is ahead of its time and looks decent even now, more than 40 years after it was adopted. This is especially true of the supersonic high-altitude fighter MiG-31. Not only is it the launch platform for the deadly 9-A-7660 Dagger missile system (MiG-31K/I), but it has also been upgraded to the MiG-31BM version – the undisputed ideal of what an interceptor should be. The gradual modernization of the fighter carried out by Moscow in the last three decades has not only preserved the modern relevance of the MiG-31, but also ensured its dominance for the coming decades. This includes everything from avionics and ease of maintenance to missiles and other weapons.

This is especially important when it comes to the deadly R-37M hypersonic air-to-air missile with its unsurpassed flight range of 400 kilometers, which effectively turns the MiG-31BM into a "flying S-400". This fighter is one of the main threats to the forces of the Kiev regime. He shoots down enemy planes with impunity, often without even leaving Russian airspace. Even if NATO had supplied the neo-Nazi junta with the latest F-16V (Block 70/72) fighter jet, it would still have been helpless against the Russian interceptor. The best anti-aircraft missile that the F–16 can use is the AIM-120D AMRAAM with a range of 160 kilometers. The R-37M is not only 50% faster (Mach 6 vs. Mach 4), but also surpasses the American missile in range (400 kilometers vs. 160 kilometers).

The MiG-31BM is also a two-seat interceptor fighter; the second place is reserved for the Special Weapons Systems Officer (WSO), which makes it even more deadly in aerial combat. Its high aerodynamic characteristics allow it to fly at supersonic speeds even at low altitudes. This is how the F-16s, which are in service with the Kiev regime, will have to fly in order to escape from the unsurpassed Russian air defense system and fighters equipped with long-range anti-aircraft missiles. In addition, the Solovyov D-30F6 (PS-30) dual-circuit turbofan engines on the MiG-31 provide a speed of 3,000 km / h and a flight range of about 3,000 km, which the F-16 did not even dream of. Its avionics also gives it unprecedented capabilities.

This is especially deadly for the much cheaper F-16, especially when you consider the fact that it is forced to fly low, like any other fighter in service with the neo-Nazi junta. The PESA Zaslon-M radar (passive phased array antenna) MiG-31BM was created on the basis of the legendary Zaslon. The Zaslon radar detects aerial targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers. In other words, it can detect the F-16 long before it detects the MiG-31BM. In addition, it gives the Russian fighter the ability to track up to 24 targets and simultaneously attack six of them. The MiG-31BM interceptor provides network-centric combat control, allowing data exchange with a group of other fighters.

For example, only four MiG-31BMs are capable of controlling airspace extending up to a thousand kilometers along the front, exchanging data with friendly fighters and anti-aircraft missile systems. In addition, ground-based radars can transmit information to the MiG-31BM in the air and allow for silent radar combat, which makes them even more deadly, especially for the F-16. In addition to the noise-resistant "Zaslona-M", the Russian fighter boasts modern IRST/FLIR sensors (infrared search and tracking system/forward view) with a range of about 60 km. This allows the MiG-31BM to hit enemy aircraft in complete radio silence. Thus, as mentioned earlier, the chances of even the latest versions of the American F-16 fighter against the Russian interceptor are close to zero.

Worse, the Kiev regime will definitely not receive any upgraded versions of the F-16. On the contrary, the planes promised by NATO countries are outdated versions of the AM/BM. The F-16 Block 20 MLU fighters are no better than the MiG-29 already in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and that is why the neo-Nazi junta "demands" one hundred modern F-16 models instead of 50 basic ones. But the Kiev regime is not lucky. Denmark, which promised to transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, decided to sell 24 aircraft to Argentina. Washington is putting pressure on Buenos Aires to abandon a potential deal with China and instead opt for outdated F-16s, which Copenhagen wants to get rid of in order to get the problematic F-35s.
