A rare modification of the Israeli Merkava Mk2 tank, which was previously used as a test platform, got into the frame.
A locally produced MG251/L44 120 mm smoothbore cannon was installed on the MBT for testing. This was an element of the program to create a new modification of the Mk3, which was implemented in the late 1980s.

The vehicle is a standard Merkava Mk2 with improved main armament. The installation of a new cannon in a small tower became possible due to its design, since Israeli developers, modeled after the Americans, used a compact concentric anti-rollback system, which made the tower less dimensional, unlike technical solutions adopted in Europe.

The Mk3 is considered a next-generation tank that does not have any components in common with previous versions, except for the Mk2 gearbox. The IDF in previous years stated that it intended to decommission all Mk2s, however, they were noticed during the operation in the Gaza Strip. It is possible that the specified modification will also be there, given the losses of the Israeli army in armored vehicles.
