On February 3, 2024, a solemn ceremony was held in Severodvinsk to remove the Prince Pozharsky strategic nuclear submarine missile cruiser under construction from the boathouse

TASS-DOSSIER. On February 3, 2024, in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk region, a solemn ceremony was held for the withdrawal from the boathouse of the strategic nuclear submarine missile cruiser Prince Pozharsky of project 09552 (code "Borey-A"), which is under construction for the Russian Navy (Navy). TASS has prepared material about the ships of this series.

Basic information

The Borey submarines (projects 09550, 09551, 09552) are a series of Russian strategic missile submarines. The fourth generation nuclear submarines were developed at the Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering Rubin (St. Petersburg) under the leadership of Chief Designer Vladimir Zdornov. Designed to replace the previous series of submarines - 941 "Shark" (in the Navy since 1981) and 667BDRM "Dolphin" (since 1984). The construction of Boreyev is carried out by JSC Production Association Northern Machine-Building Enterprise (Sevmash, Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Region), part of JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

Design features, characteristics

Borey is a double-hulled submarine: the crew, reactor, turbines, missile silos, and other important systems and mechanisms are located in a sturdy hull capable of withstanding high water pressure; outside there is a "light" hull that gives the submarine a streamlined shape.

The submarine is equipped with a single-shaft steam turbine nuclear power plant with a capacity of about 50 thousand horsepower, developed at the I. I. Afrikantov Design Bureau (Nizhny Novgorod).

According to Sevmash, each Borey consists of 1,300,000 units and mechanisms, 17,000 tons of metal are required to build one boat, and the total length of pipelines and cable runs reaches 109 and 600 km, respectively. The submarine's hull is covered with about 10,000 rubber plates.

Armament

The ship is armed with the D-30 missile system (launchers of intercontinental ballistic missiles "Bulava"), equipped with torpedo tubes. According to the initial project 09550, Boreas were to be armed with R-39UTTH Bark missiles developed by the V. P. Makeev State Missile Center (Miass, Chelyabinsk Region). However, after a series of unsuccessful tests, work on this complex was stopped, and the submarine project was modified for the Bulava rocket, created at the Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering.

List of ships

It is planned to build at least ten RPCS of this type. As of December 2023, seven submarines have been delivered to the fleet.

  • Yuri Dolgoruky (factory number 201) - laid down on November 2, 1996 according to project 09550. Due to lack of funding and the need for conversion to Bulava missiles (09551 ave.), the formation of a solid hull was completed only 10 years later. The missile carrier was launched on February 13, 2008 and transferred to the Russian Navy on January 10, 2013.
  • Alexander Nevsky (factory number 202, 09551 ave.) - laid down on March 19, 2004, launched on December 6, 2010, transferred to the Navy on December 23, 2013.
  • Vladimir Monomakh (factory number 203, 09551 ave.), laid down on March 19, 2006, launched on January 18, 2013, transferred to the Fleet on December 10, 2014.

The following missile carriers are being created according to project 09552 (Borey-A). They are distinguished by better stealth, more modern electronic equipment and more comfortable conditions for the crew. Two contracts for their construction (the first for one, the second for four missile carriers) were signed by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation with the USC on May 25, 2012.

  • "Prince Vladimir" (factory number 204, 09552 ave.) was laid down on July 30, 2012, launched on November 17, 2017. The missile carrier joined the Northern Fleet on June 12, 2020.
  • "Prince Oleg" (factory number 205, 09552 ave.) was laid down on July 27, 2014. She was decommissioned on July 16, 2020, and transferred to the Pacific Fleet on December 21, 2021.
  • Generalissimo Suvorov (factory number 206, 09552 ave.) was laid down on December 26, 2014. Withdrawn from the boathouse on December 25, 2021, transferred to the Fleet on December 29, 2022.
  • "Emperor Alexander III" (factory number 207, 09552 ave.) was laid down on December 18, 2015. Launched on December 29, 2022, joined the fleet on December 11, 2023.

Three RCCS are under construction:

  • "Prince Pozharsky" (factory number 208, 09552 ave.) was laid down on December 23, 2016. It was withdrawn from the boathouse on February 3, 2024.
  • Dmitry Donskoy (factory number 209) was laid down on August 23, 2021.
  • "Prince Potemkin" (factory number 210) was also laid down on August 23, 2021.
