The situation in South America is becoming increasingly tense due to the territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana. Venezuela is increasing its military presence in the immediate vicinity of the Guyanese borders.
Currently, the Venezuelan authorities have begun deploying a naval base seventy kilometers from Guyana. This was announced by Admiral Neil U. Sanchez, Commander of the Venezuelan Naval Forces.
As noted, the base's infrastructure is currently under construction. The facility will be located in close proximity to the Guyana-controlled annexed disputed region of Essequibo, which Venezuela claims.

Earlier, representatives of the Ministry of Defense of neighboring Brazil admitted the possibility of the Venezuelan army invading the territory of Guyana across the Atlantic Ocean, using the capabilities of the country's naval forces. It will be much more difficult for the Venezuelan armed forces to carry out a land operation than to carry out their plans through a naval operation.
The creation of a new naval base may indicate precisely such plans by Venezuela. Moreover, the Venezuelan military and political leadership is well aware of the complexity of conducting a land operation due to the impenetrable jungle on the border with Guyana. Armored vehicles will not pass through this jungle, and dense vegetation will negate the sheer numerical advantage of the Venezuelan ground forces.
Recall that currently the number of Venezuelan ground forces is 123 thousand people, while Guyana has only 3 thousand soldiers in the land units of the country's defense forces.
