The fifth submarine of Project 636.3 for the Pacific Fleet
Mozhaysk became the fifth submarine in the line of six ships of Project 636.3, which are being built at Admiralty Shipyards for the Pacific Fleet. Earlier it included Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Volkhov, Magadan and Ufa.
According to Izvestia sources in the Russian Defense Ministry, the Mozhaysk Baltic Fleet will leave no earlier than the summer of 2024, after working out the so-called course tasks. It is possible that he will take part in the main naval parade in St. Petersburg, dedicated to the Day of the Russian Navy - it is traditionally held on the last Sunday of July.
There are two possible routes of the inter-fleet crossing. The southern one runs through the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean. In this case, Mozhaysk can be loaded with "Calibers" and perform combat missions in the interests of the Russian group of troops in Syria.
The second option of the hike is through the Northern Sea Route. Last year, the Magadan boat of Project 636.3 passed to the Pacific Ocean by the Northern Sea Route, having completed combat training tasks in polar latitudes. It was the first non-nuclear submarine crossing this route in decades. Its tests in the Arctic latitudes were carried out as part of the integrated Arctic expedition "Umka-2022". As a result, the ships of project 636.3 were recognized as suitable for operations in the Arctic.
End of the series
Mozhaysk, together with the Yakutsk boat completing the series, were laid down in 2021. Yakutsk is planned to be completed in 2024. All ships enter the 19th Brigade of the Primorsky Flotilla of the heterogeneous forces of the Pacific Fleet. Earlier, from 2010 to 2016, a series of six ships was built for the Black Sea Fleet.
The ships of Project 636 in Soviet times were developed for export to the Warsaw Pact countries. Since the second half of the 1990s, they have been built for China, Algeria and Vietnam. Then it was decided to purchase them for the Russian fleet. They are created according to the upgraded version 636.3, have improved driving characteristics, reduced noise level, modern automated control system and navigation system.
The key tasks of the submarines of Project 636.3 are the destruction of surface and ground targets, patrolling areas of combat duty by submarine strategic missile carriers, reconnaissance, as well as countering enemy submarines. They have a displacement of over 3.9 thousand tons, length — 74 m, speed — 18 knots, navigation autonomy — up to 45 days. The maximum diving depth is 300 m. The ship is equipped with six torpedo tubes. It can use torpedoes, mines, as well as Kalibr cruise missiles. The crew consists of 52 people.
