According to foreign media reports, after the start of serial production, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) adopted the first main battle tanks "Merkava 5" (Merkava V) under the designation "Barak" ("Lightning"). Thus, the fifth generation of this tank model, which appeared in 1978, began to enter the troops.
During the modernization, special attention was paid to combat control, firing and situational awareness. According to AOI, the highlight of the new car is the commander's combat helmet manufactured by Elbit. The helmet is equipped with an IronVision display [...] that shows the tank commander the surrounding environment ("transparent armor") depending on the position of the head, as well as relevant data for fire control.
Augmented reality is created by combining images from outdoor cameras, sensors and other data and transmits to the commander a complete picture of the situation and what he can do. At the same time, it is possible to match the position of the tower with the direction of view, minimizing the reaction time to changes in the situation.
The first MBT "Barrack" was transferred to the 52nd tank battalion of the IDF
It is also reported that the "Barrack" is equipped with a wide and reliable sensor infrastructure, which will allow it to cover the territory more fully than before, identify targets on it and engage in battle in a short time. The combat sights of the commander and gunner continuously and in real time display the received data and ensure the collection and exchange of information.
As explained in a joint statement by the Ministry of Defense and the IDF press service, artificial intelligence (AI) methods are used to collect and process incoming signals and present information in a combat helmet and on other multi-touch screens. This allows the crew to detect the enemy faster and identify targets, and therefore adapt faster to changing combat situations, thereby increasing survivability.

With regard to improving the security of the machine, we are talking about integrating an updated version of the active protection system (APS) WindGard (aka Trophy) from Rafael into the design of the model. According to IDF standards, the Merkava V is considered to be a particularly well-protected MBT.
At the same time, the on-board 120-mm gun of the tank, as before, remained without a loading machine. The power plant is located in the right front bow of the tank and still consists of an 1120 kW MTU diesel and a Renk Rk 325. This makes it possible to accelerate the "Barrack" weighing about 65 tons to 64 km/h on the road.
As stated by the Director General of the Ministry of Defense of Israel, Major General (in reserve) Eyal Zamir: "The Barak tank is the most advanced combat vehicle of this type in the world, which will provide fire capabilities, artificial intelligence, intelligence, communications and active defense for the Israel Defense Forces, Israeli Ground Forces and tank Corps soldiers. This is a breakthrough on the modern battlefield."
