"Shortest guidance time": NATO artillery is equipped with a new Geonyx inertial navigation system

In 2018, the French company Safran introduced a new Geonyx inertial navigation system with the latest generation HRG CRYSTAL gyroscope, which has a guaranteed service life of 1 million hours.

This is the most compact INS with first-class accuracy and the shortest guidance time

- the manufacturer claims.

Geonyx weighs 6 kg, occupies a volume of less than 5 liters and has an energy consumption of 15 watts.

Observing the course of the conflict in Ukraine, NATO strategists concluded about the huge role of artillery in the confrontation with an equivalent enemy. In this regard, programs for the modernization of the gun fleet are being launched. So, Spain ordered the installation of the Geonyx INS on towed howitzers 155/52, coastal artillery and self-propelled guns M-109-A5 caliber 155/39.

Geonyx was chosen by the command to replace the outdated INS Kearfott

- it is noted in the publication Infodefensa.

Under the initial contract, the new INS will be equipped with 100 howitzers for 30 million euros. Given the constant supply of materiel from Spain to Ukraine, we can expect that the improved systems will eventually fall into the non-monetary. At the moment, Madrid has already transferred 81/120-mm mortars on the M113 APC platform, towed 105-mm OTO Melara Mod 56 howitzers and 120-mm Alakran mortars to Toyota Land Cruisers from artillery to the AFU (in the process of delivery).
