United Engine Corporation (part of Rostec State Corporation) held a panel discussion on the prospects of using hybrid and power plants in unmanned aircraft systems as part of the business program of the Technoprom International Technological Development Forum in Novosibirsk. In particular, the issues of the development of urban air mobility on the horizon until 2050 and the building of cooperative chains for the production of such drones were touched upon.
During the discussion, Mikhail Shemet, Deputy Director of the UEC-Klimov Advanced engines program, spoke about the future of hybrid power plants. The basis for the presentation was the research work carried out by the enterprise aimed at creating hybrid power plants based on its own gas turbine engines.
"GSU has broad application prospects. According to our estimates, a hybrid installation, including electric and gas turbine components, will be the optimal solution for transport drones with a multirotor architecture for vertical takeoff and a fixed wing for horizontal "airplane-like" flight. An electric power plant, in fact a GSU without a turbo generator, can be useful in the emerging field of air mobility in the world, for example, it can be equipped with an air taxi. In this case, short flight ranges are acceptable, and environmental friendliness and noise reduction come to the fore," Mikhail Shemet noted.
Among the advantages of hybrid power plants over traditional gas turbine ones are reduced fuel consumption, longer service life and flight safety, improved flight characteristics of the aircraft and the possibility of forming a whole line of GSU based on a single gas turbine engine by varying the power of the electrical part.
The International Forum of Technological Development "Technoprom" is being held in Novosibirsk for the tenth time. The main task of the forum is to organize a platform for building cooperation in the field of high technologies. The Forum is one of the most important platforms for the interaction of the UEC with higher educational institutions, scientific organizations, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, organizations of academic and branch science.
Within the framework of the forum, the United Engine Corporation holds several panel discussions on topical areas: "Synthetic fuel"; "Prospects for the development of urban air mobility on the horizon of 2050"; "Electric machines and energy storage"; "Limitations and prospects for the development of new energy generation in Russia" (jointly with the State Corporation Rosatom).
