On August 23, 2023, infantrymen from the 3rd Grey Wolf Armored Brigade of the US Army participated in exercises in the Arizona desert, during which a new lightweight LW CLU aiming system installed on the Javelin ATGM was tested.
- it is noted on the website of the US Army.
The ATGM sight operates in three modes. The first one is responsible for night vision with 4x magnification and is mainly used to illuminate the terrain during night operations. The second, the main viewing mode, provides scanning in the infrared range with 4x magnification, showing the gunner thermal traces of targets and thereby allowing to detect hidden troops and equipment. The third type is an IR view with 9x magnification [in a narrow channel, the viewing angle is not called], similar, as it is claimed, to the automatic magnification function on most modern cameras [for civilian purposes].
The position of the handles and controls of the new sighting system have been changed to provide greater comfort, which provides a more natural fixation during prolonged use. The lightness and compactness of the LW CLU makes it more portable and maneuverable in a combat zone.
