German engines of the MTU family were valued for their long service life and ability to withstand high loads. In particular, before Berlin imposed sanctions in 2014, they equipped a number of ships of the Russian fleet, for example, the Buyan-M project. However, in recent years, customers have increasingly expressed their dissatisfaction with the quality of these power plants.
The commander-in-chief of the Uruguayan Navy, Admiral Jorge Wilson, said that the fleet is facing serious problems related to the maintenance and durability of German MTU 396 engines, with which some units are equipped. So, a few months ago, three used American-made Marine Protector boats were put into operation, purchased for $ 6 million.
- the admiral declared.
The rapid depreciation of German power plants led to the fact that the fleet refused to accept the "gift" made by Germany in the form of two SAR search and rescue boats (in addition to the two previously purchased in 2018 for $ 1 million).
Uruguay does not have the competence to repair MTU engines on its own, and the cost of the relevant work (disassembly of the power plant and inspection of every detail) abroad will exceed $ 500 thousand.
- the conclusion is made in the Defensa edition.
