SandboxAQ, owned, like Google, by Alphabet, is collaborating with the US Air Force to develop a quantum positioning system that is designed to replace or complement GPS.
At this stage, the new system is intended for use in military operations in areas not covered by GPS, or in situations where this system will be jammed. The project is based on the application of quantum methods and artificial intelligence algorithms.
As explained in SandboxAQ, in the interests of the US Air Force, it is planned to use advanced quantum technologies that significantly increase the accuracy of navigation. The system will use the unique capabilities of quantum sensors with high sensitivity to changes in magnetic and electric fields to achieve unprecedented positioning and navigation accuracy.

The work of quantum sensors will be coordinated by AI to improve system performance. For example, AI algorithms effectively detect and mitigate interference from sources such as aircraft vibration.
SandboxAQ has already tested a new navigation system in the air, installing it on a C-17 military transport aircraft. The US Air Force believes that work in this direction will contribute to strengthening the national security of the country.
