The active use of Western weapons by the Armed Forces of Ukraine makes it possible to identify individual shortcomings in combat systems and make appropriate improvements to them. Thus, the Ministry of Defense of the Italian Troops plans to modernize part of its fleet of towed 155-mm FH70 howitzers, which saturated the combat formations of the Kiev regime troops after the start of the SVO.
The improvement procedure, which will cost over 20 million euros, will be carried out based on the results of the combat use of 54 copies of the artillery system. The upgrade will affect two key aspects of the FH70: mobility and accuracy of fire.
The installation of a new 40 kW engine will allow the FH70 to reach speeds of more than 15 km/h. Howitzers will also receive an auxiliary power plant, which will make it possible to quickly activate the entire artillery system and move for a short time, for example, changing the firing position, without having to start the main engine.
To increase the accuracy of firing, it is planned to install an autonomous navigation system, control and control of the LINAPS cannon and equipment used to measure the initial velocity of projectiles.
The FH70 is a towed self–propelled howitzer developed jointly by Britain, Germany and Italy. This artillery system was adopted in 1976. Its main operators are Italy, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Ukraine.
