Azerbaijan has started the modernization of the Su-25 attack aircraft in service with the republic's Air Force, the work is being carried out in close cooperation with Turkey. According to the local press, the Turks are integrating Turkish precision weapons into the Soviet aircraft.
The beginning of work on the modernization of the assault aircraft of the Azerbaijani Air Force was reported last year, in May 2023, the Defense Ministers of Azerbaijan and Turkey Zakir Hasanov and Hulusi Akar observed the bombing of the updated Su-25 at the Konya training ground. To date, the Turks have upgraded two of the eighteen aircraft. In total, the Azerbaijani Air Force has 16 Su-25 and 2 Su-25UB in service, how many of them will be upgraded is not known, the Turks themselves say that the contract has been concluded for a "certain" number of aircraft.
The main contractor from the Turkish side is TUBITAK-SAGE, which has integrated KGK and Teber high-precision bombs into the Su-25 arsenal. In addition, the avionics of the aircraft has also been upgraded, but there are no details.
The KGK-83 complex is a Turkish Mk 83 aerial bomb equipped with an aerodynamic kit and an INS/GPS guidance system developed by the Turkish company TÜBITAK SAGE. It is capable of hitting targets at a range of up to 100 km. Teber is a guidance kit for equipping 125 and 250 kg aircraft bombs. The kit includes: a semi-active laser GPS and a tail unit with aerodynamic surfaces, which houses an inertial navigation system, a search engine for a space reconnaissance and observation system, steering drives and a battery.
Earlier, Azerbaijani Su-25s have already been able to use QFAB-250LG bombs with a laser guidance kit manufactured by the Turkish company ASELSAN.
