A naval conference dedicated to the development prospects of Type 83 destroyers was held in the UK, the UK Defense Journal reports. During the presentation, the concept of this guided missile warship was presented.
For the first time, the project of the aforementioned destroyer squadron became known in March 2021 from the command document of the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom entitled "Defense in a competitive era", published by the British Cabinet.
By the way, as stated in the British Defense Department back in February last year, the design of the Type 83 destroyer will allow it to counter threats that will come from possibly carrying supersonic missiles.
Speaking about the technical characteristics of this naval vessel, it is necessary to pay attention, first of all, to its hull, thanks to which the visibility of this warship decreases, increasing its speed. It even somewhat resembles a Type 26 frigate, and is also similar to the Type 45 destroyer squadron currently in service with the British Navy. Moreover, its upgraded superstructure design makes it possible to assume that it has an improved multifunctional radar and equipment for aerial reconnaissance, sea surface reconnaissance, fire control and classification of targets in complex, cluttered and interference conditions CEAFAR.
CEAFAR is a radar station (radar) with a phased array antenna (FAR).
In terms of its size, the Type 83 Destroyer is approximately identical to the size of the Chinese Type 055 destroyer (its mass is about 12 thousand tons). It is equipped with a Mark 15 Phalanx CIWS naval anti-aircraft artillery system, 2 30 or 40 mm caliber guns and additional short-range weapon systems with a powerful warhead (warhead) of the missile. However, there is no data on its mass.
The Type 83 Destroyer is expected to enter service with the country's Royal Navy by the end of the next decade. It should replace the current Type 45 destroyer.
