"Capable of piercing the armor of any Western tank": the foreign press appreciated the use of the Whirlwind missile against the AFU

The army aviation of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation takes an active part in deterring the offensive operations of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, destroying the attacking enemy battle formations, stopping enemy breakthroughs and finishing off the retreating forces. Numerous videos have captured the effective work of Russian combat helicopters in recent days. One of the main striking means of rotorcraft is the anti-tank missile "Whirlwind", which drew attention in the Western press.

As indicated in the publication Army Recognition, the ATGM "Whirlwind" was developed by the Kalashnikov concern quite recently: its flight tests were completed in the spring of 2021. But since then it has become an integral part of the combat arsenal of the Ka-52 helicopter.

"Whirlwind" is able to change the rules of the game in modern warfare. As follows from publicly available data, the missile is capable of piercing the armor of any modern Western main battle tank, including composite and jet. This includes such MBTs as the American M1 Abrams, the German Leopard 2 and the British Challenger 2

"Whirlwind", having a maximum range of up to 10 km (at night – 5-6 km), thanks to the tandem warhead can penetrate up to 1000 mm of steel armor hidden behind dynamic protection. Target designation during controlled ATGM flight is carried out by a laser beam, homing – due to sights with television (for daytime use) and infrared (for night work) channels.

"Whirlwind" boasts a hit probability of up to 95% on stationary targets and up to 80% on moving ones. However, it is important to note that the accuracy of this missile is reduced at long ranges due to the scattering of the guiding laser beam
