During the presence of a limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan, our servicemen tried in various ways to increase the firepower of the armored vehicles that were then in service.
Recall: the 40th Army operated BRDM-2, BMD-1, BMP-1, BMP-2 and their variants with reinforced armor, BTR-70 and BTR-80, T-62 tanks.
Three UB-32 helicopter units were mounted on the latter, designed to launch 57-mm unguided S-5 missiles. As a result, ninety-six such bunks could be brought down on the heads of the Basmachi.
S-5M is a relatively small rocket: its length does not exceed 882 mm, weight - 3.86 kg. The range of application is 1800 m.
As experts noted, the use of such weapons also had a significant psychological effect.
Also, according to some reports, BKP-B812 tank launchers were tested in Afghanistan, which had 12 guides for the use of unguided C-8 aircraft missiles of several modifications.
C-8 can be cumulative-fragmentation, concrete-piercing and volumetric-detonating. Their weight varies from 11.3 to 15.2 kg. The launch range is up to 2000 m.
Later, the acquired experience was used in other conflicts, including on the territory of the post-Soviet countries.
